  • 55: Social Connection Through Volunteering
    Jan 6 2026

Social connection is a key to aging well. Volunteering is one opportunity to connect with others who share similar interests while also giving back. In January, the Martin Luther King Day of Service is an excellent time to check out opportunities in your community to meet new people and volunteer. The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging encourages everyone to find ways to stay connected to counter isolation and depression.

Aging with Altitude is recorded in the Pikes Peak region with a focus on topics of aging interest across the country. We talk about both the everyday and novel needs and approaches to age with altitude – whether you’re in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida or Leadville, Colorado. The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging is the producer. Melissa Marts with the Area Agency on Aging is our moderator.

    Dec 1 2025

The ability to drive and have access to a vehicle is recognized as a critical need and skill as we age. The more we talk openly about this, the more we learn there are many tools, steps, adaptations, and supports available to facilitate independence – to either keep driving or access alternatives. Learn more as we visit with Terry Cassidy of Fitness to Drive. During December, families often come together and see there may be issues evolving. For this reason, Older Driver Awareness week was established in December.

    Nov 10 2025

Caregivers can be a dying breed. It is a startling statistic that 68% of caregivers die before their care recipient. This makes an excellent call to action for this episode on Celebrating Caregiving in America. We release this episode during the holiday months of November and December because caregivers often find themselves even further isolated at this time. Listeners who know caregivers will learn about how to reach out to your caregiver friend, and caregivers, we want you to know how valued you are after listening in.

    Oct 21 2025

Seniors can find non-biased Medicare counseling and information on how to avoid Medicare scams. The State Health Insurance Program, or SHIP, is a nationwide program funded by the federal government to support Medicare benefit evaluation for seniors on an individual basis. Medicare.gov has made plan evaluation much more accessible, however, if you are still looking for consultation on a plan or wondering if the text you got is a scam, contact your local SHIP office. During open enrollment, tune into this SHIP episode for more information.

  • 49: Renewed Value in Intergenerational Connecting
    Oct 9 2025

What happens when bright young people are left to their own devices? With Jump Start the Aging Workforce internships, JAWS, high school students not only finished one internship, they launched another self-directed experiment to connect with seniors in long term care. Students were so interested in learning more about the seniors they met in long term care, they decided to start a story project to continue the blossoming relationships. This project includes multi-media platforms to tell the stories; there is music, poetry, painting, photography, written word and much more. With the support of Long-Term Care Ombudsmen, we are happy to know this project launched during Residents Rights Month, October, which is an opportunity to reaffirm that seniors in long term care are unique people with rich histories.

  • 48: Senior Center - Re-opening of an Old Friend
    Sep 24 2025

Senior centers are vital gathering hubs for older adults. It is recommended there be one senior center per population of 25,000, this generates to Colorado Springs needing 19 senior centers. The city historically has had one senior center, and it has been undergoing a rebuild for the past two years, leaving its biggest fans at a loss for connection and engagement. September is Senior Center Month, so in this episode Judith McKay quizzes Tom Lathrop about the re-opening of the Colorado Springs Senior Center. This old friend definitely is providing some new trends and treats.
