  • 50: Healthy Check Up Time on Medicare Scams and Plan Options
    Oct 21 2025

Seniors can find non-biased Medicare counseling and information on how to avoid Medicare scams. The State Health Insurance Program, or SHIP, is a nationwide program funded by the federal government to support Medicare benefit evaluation for seniors on an individual basis. Medicare.gov has made plan evaluation much more accessible, however, if you are still looking for consultation on a plan or wondering if the text you got is a scam, contact your local SHIP office. During open enrollment, tune into this SHIP episode for more information.

In this episode, Rhonda Wray, managing editor of Beacon Senior News, also visits with host Melissa Marts, highlighting some of the coverage in their October issue – including stories about the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival, and Colorado’s Haunted Hot Spots.

  • 49: Renewed Value in Intergenerational Connecting
    Oct 9 2025

What happens when bright young people are left to their own devices? With Jump Start the Aging Workforce internships, JAWS, high school students not only finished one internship, they launched another self-directed experiment to connect with seniors in long term care. Students were so interested in learning more about the seniors they met in long term care, they decided to start a story project to continue the blossoming relationships. This project includes multi-media platforms to tell the stories; there is music, poetry, painting, photography, written word and much more. With the support of Long-Term Care Ombudsmen, we are happy to know this project launched during Residents Rights Month, October, which is an opportunity to reaffirm that seniors in long term care are unique people with rich histories.

  • 48: Senior Center - Re-opening of an Old Friend
    Sep 24 2025

Senior centers are vital gathering hubs for older adults. It is recommended there be one senior center per population of 25,000, this generates to Colorado Springs needing 19 senior centers. The city historically has had one senior center, and it has been undergoing a rebuild for the past two years, leaving its biggest fans at a loss for connection and engagement. September is Senior Center Month, so in this episode Judith McKay quizzes Tom Lathrop about the re-opening of the Colorado Springs Senior Center. This old friend definitely is providing some new trends and treats.
