  • Education Tools for Children with Special Needs
    Apr 8 2025
The hosts welcome Kathy Hoback, the disability support services coordinator at Metropolitan Community College, to talk about ways to help children with disabilities and special needs in the education system. A disability is anything that affects one or more major life functions, including learning. One of the best things parents who have children with special needs can do when navigating their education is to be proactive. That looks different depending on the age and whether a student is in the public education system or is homeschooled. Either way, the sooner parents notice their child has special needs and seek testing or answers, the better. Once the parents and the child have a diagnosis, they can start finding ways to support the student with special needs in the classroom. Some modifications or accommodations a child with special needs might include: A longer test More time to read a book or work on an assignment A quiet room to work on assignments or projects Some of these modifications aren’t possible at the college level. That’s why it’s important for parents who have children with special needs to prepare their students for college. Kathy says around the time a child is 14 to 16 years old, they need to start what’s called the “transition of rights.” That means the child starts understanding their own disability and taking charge of their education so they can be their own advocate. This helps the student with special needs gain their own autonomy. Knowing what their diagnosis is and how they learn best will help them pursue help and advocate for themselves in college or post-high school education. Kathy wanted every parent who has a child with special needs to know, everything is going to be okay. The earlier they reach out to a professional for help, the better for their child’s education. • The Importance of Summer Camp | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E15
    Mar 25 2025
The Hildebrands welcome Paytn Schumer, the Student Ministry Director at Abundant Life, and Meg Gasper, the Children’s Event Coordinator at Abundant Life, to talk about the importance of summer camp. The hosts talked about how summer camp changed their lives. Jen was saved at a Vacation Bible School event as a child, and she learned to really follow God and grew a relationship with Him at summer camp. That camp is also where she met Bill, so it has a special place in their hearts. Bill spoke about how it was his favorite place to be, and he never wanted to leave. Paytn and Meg talked about how summer camp is an opportunity for children to grow in their relationship with God through music, friendships, sermons, Bible study, and more. Students get to build relationships with like-minded peers and mentors while they are away from home. They also learn how to follow Jesus in a safe and fun environment, and are equipped with the tools to keep learning once they get home. Sending your child to summer camp removes the distractions of a routine, social media, and technology. At summer camp, your child gets to have fun while also learning more about God’s character. They get to fully focus on God, the Bible, and His people. The Hildebrands described summer camp as another tool in the toolbox for parents to help their children grow spiritually. Abundant Life has summer camp options for middle to high school students called ONEWEEK, along with a summer camp for elementary-age children. • Importance of Financially Planning for Families | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E14
    Mar 11 2025
Roger Sprouse, a financial advisor, joins the Hildebrands to discuss financial planning for families. Roger has been working in the financial sector for 30 years, and he shares with the Hildebrands how he and his wife prepared their children financially for the world. Some of the ways Roger says he and his wife financially planned for their family were: Always making it a focus to go to a good, wise church Having open communication with your children Make giving to the Lord a priority Roger spoke about the importance of the 10-10-80 rule when financially planning for families. Ten percent of your income first goes to the Lord, the next ten percent goes toward your savings, and you live off the 80% that’s left. The hosts and Roger say that the rule helps families plan for the future, especially when it comes to living debt-free. Families should aim to live without debt because it allows them to do so many things, like give more to the church. The Hildebrands chimed in with their story of being missionaries in Africa and talked about how they couldn’t serve as missionaries until they became debt free as a family. • Talking to Your Children About Same-Sex Attraction | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E13
    Feb 25 2025
Dr. Cary Corely, a family counselor, joins the Hildebrands to discuss helpful ways parents should respond when their child says they are struggling with same-sex attraction. Dr. Corely discussed the importance of not saying or doing anything definitive in that conversation about same-sex attraction. He encouraged parents to take time to think and process while still expressing love for the child. This gave the Holy Spirit the time to help the parents understand how He wanted them to respond. When parents are able to process, Dr. Corely highlights places they should turn: Prayer Bible (specifically the book of Romans) The Hildebrands mentioned how it might be easy for parents to ask themselves, “What did I do wrong?” Dr. Corely said several factors that come into play when it comes to same-sex attraction. There are many families where the children struggle with same sex attraction, and it has nothing to do with what the parents did or did not do. The hosts want to remind parents the importance of making a difference with our kids by love and support while also not sacrificing our own beliefs. • Helping Your Children Through Grief & Loss | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E12
    Feb 11 2025
The Hildebrands welcome Carolyn Asher, a counselor at Abundant Life, to discuss children’s grief and loss and ways for parents to help them through that process. Jen shared about losing her brother after a long battle with cancer. She asked Carolyn about the ways to help her children grieve the loss of their uncle. Carolyn says it’s just as important for parents to learn how to grieve so they can help with their children’s grief and loss. She outlined the five stages of grief: Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance Going through the stages of grief and loss is difficult. Each person goes through a stage in their own time. Parents wanting to help their children’s grief and loss need to model behavior. An example of that can be showing how they lean on God during the process. Another way parents can help their children’s grief and loss is by asking their kids what they are feeling. Parents can empathize with their children too. Sharing their feelings during the difficult time can show a child it’s okay for them to be struggling too. • Parenting Your Children Through Sports | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E11
    Jan 28 2025
Les Norman, a former Kansas City Royals player and host of the radio show, “Breakin’ the Norm,” joins the hosts to talk about parenting and sports. Les talked about how when he was growing up, sports were an escape. He wanted to be part of something that was joyful and happy instead of the fighting and abuse he saw at home. When he was married, he talked with his wife about parenting their children while he was an MLB player. Les knew he didn’t want to raise his children while on the road. He retired from professional baseball before his two boys were born. As they navigated parenting and sports, Les decided to coach his kids’ teams. Les shared some of the ways parents can help sports and faith intersect. Sports can help teach kids biblical characteristics like: Character Teamwork Respect Perseverance Before putting a child into a youth league, Les said every parent needs to ask themselves why. It cannot be motivated by an unfulfilled dream of yours or a need to pay for college when they’re older. Encouraging your children to participate in sports can be a healthy parenting tool, but parents must check their motives. Les also highlighted the importance of balance for parents raising children who are playing sports. Not every moment, especially when they’re young, needs to be about the game or the team. Children are children at the end of the day, and they need time and space to be kids! Join Les as he shares how to honor the Lord while navigating parenting and sports. • A Heart for Fostering and Adopting | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E10
    Jan 14 2025
Matt and Jocelyn Kepner joined the hosts to talk about the importance of fostering and adopting. They talk about Matt’s difficult upbringing. He bounced around houses from the time he was 15 years old until he was an adult. When Matt married Jocelyn, he was worried about being a good father because he didn’t have any good examples while growing up. Jocelyn brought up fostering. They prayed about it, seeking guidance on making such a large commitment and if it would be right for their family. Later on, they felt God calling them to it. Jocelyn explains the purpose of fostering and how it’s different from adoption. Fostering provides children who came from abusive or neglectful homes with a safe place to stay while their parents go through programs to prove to the government that they are fit to take care of their children again. The ultimate goal of fostering is to reunify the children with their parents. In seven years, the Kepners have fostered 29 children. Fostering and adopting can be very rewarding. It requires a lot of patience, compassion and leaning on God. The Kepners say there are important questions every couple or family should ask before fostering or adopting. How is my relationship with God? How will this impact my family dynamic? Do I have a good support system? Abundant Life has resources for foster and adoptive families, which you can find that at https://livingproof.co/get-involved/family/foster-and-adoption/ Thanks for joining us this week! ____    Don’t forget to click the “bell” to SUBSCRIBE to get more videos like this to grow your faith!    The Family Ministry at Abundant Life is here to help you build a family that lasts. • Handling Family Conflict with Your Teen | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E9
    Dec 31 2024
Toshaun Avery, the Student Pastor at Abundant Life joins the hosts to talk about dealing with family conflict, especially for families with teenagers. Toshaun encourages parents to remember relationships are the foundation. He says they need to be honest with themselves about where they’ve invested in their child’s life and if they really know their teen. Toshaun says when handling family conflict, parents should answer the following questions for themselves: What do you want them to know when addressing conflict? What do you want them to do after this conversation? What do you want to accomplish by having this conversation? What do you want them to feel? The hosts remembered while they were raising their sons how important it was to ask questions. Seeking to understand where their children were when handling family conflict helped the parents see another perspective. The hosts and Toshaun also highlighted the importance of timing the conversation for when the child might be more receptive to it. Knowing if your child has had a bad day can make the conversation not go as well as parents dealing with family conflict might hope. Toshaun and the hosts also discussed some resources for parents while raising their children and dealing with family conflict. One of these was Abundant Life’s Counseling Center.
