  • Education Tools for Children with Special Needs
    Apr 8 2025
The hosts welcome Kathy Hoback, the disability support services coordinator at Metropolitan Community College, to talk about ways to help children with disabilities and special needs in the education system. A disability is anything that affects one or more major life functions, including learning. One of the best things parents who have children with special needs can do when navigating their education is to be proactive. That looks different depending on the age and whether a student is in the public education system or is homeschooled. Either way, the sooner parents notice their child has special needs and seek testing or answers, the better. Once the parents and the child have a diagnosis, they can start finding ways to support the student with special needs in the classroom. Some modifications or accommodations a child with special needs might include: A longer test More time to read a book or work on an assignment A quiet room to work on assignments or projects Some of these modifications aren’t possible at the college level. That’s why it’s important for parents who have children with special needs to prepare their students for college. Kathy says around the time a child is 14 to 16 years old, they need to start what’s called the “transition of rights.” That means the child starts understanding their own disability and taking charge of their education so they can be their own advocate. This helps the student with special needs gain their own autonomy. Knowing what their diagnosis is and how they learn best will help them pursue help and advocate for themselves in college or post-high school education. Kathy wanted every parent who has a child with special needs to know, everything is going to be okay. The earlier they reach out to a professional for help, the better for their child’s education. • The Importance of Summer Camp | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E15
    Mar 25 2025
The Hildebrands welcome Paytn Schumer, the Student Ministry Director at Abundant Life, and Meg Gasper, the Children’s Event Coordinator at Abundant Life, to talk about the importance of summer camp. The hosts talked about how summer camp changed their lives. Jen was saved at a Vacation Bible School event as a child, and she learned to really follow God and grew a relationship with Him at summer camp. That camp is also where she met Bill, so it has a special place in their hearts. Bill spoke about how it was his favorite place to be, and he never wanted to leave. Paytn and Meg talked about how summer camp is an opportunity for children to grow in their relationship with God through music, friendships, sermons, Bible study, and more. Students get to build relationships with like-minded peers and mentors while they are away from home. They also learn how to follow Jesus in a safe and fun environment, and are equipped with the tools to keep learning once they get home. Sending your child to summer camp removes the distractions of a routine, social media, and technology. At summer camp, your child gets to have fun while also learning more about God’s character. They get to fully focus on God, the Bible, and His people. The Hildebrands described summer camp as another tool in the toolbox for parents to help their children grow spiritually. Abundant Life has summer camp options for middle to high school students called ONEWEEK, along with a summer camp for elementary-age children. • Importance of Financially Planning for Families | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E14
    Mar 11 2025
Roger Sprouse, a financial advisor, joins the Hildebrands to discuss financial planning for families. Roger has been working in the financial sector for 30 years, and he shares with the Hildebrands how he and his wife prepared their children financially for the world. Some of the ways Roger says he and his wife financially planned for their family were: Always making it a focus to go to a good, wise church Having open communication with your children Make giving to the Lord a priority Roger spoke about the importance of the 10-10-80 rule when financially planning for families. Ten percent of your income first goes to the Lord, the next ten percent goes toward your savings, and you live off the 80% that’s left. The hosts and Roger say that the rule helps families plan for the future, especially when it comes to living debt-free. Families should aim to live without debt because it allows them to do so many things, like give more to the church. The Hildebrands chimed in with their story of being missionaries in Africa and talked about how they couldn’t serve as missionaries until they became debt free as a family.
