Yamada no Goji is a minor nobleman of ancient Japan who has lost everything - except a single purpose: keep a promise to the woman he loved. In order to fulfill his vow, all he has to do is fight a horde of demons and monsters, bargain with a few ghosts, outwit the sinister schemers of the emperor's court, find a way to defeat an assassin who cannot be seen, heard, or touched - and change the course of history. Fortunately, Yamada specializes in achieving the seemingly impossible, so he is sure in some way to succeed... if he doesn't drink himself into oblivion first.

It seems like the author knew of and described Japanese places and culture very well.

I found this book to be highly intriguing once we moved past the repeat of the short story in book one. That short story is necessary to understand the plot of book two if you’re a new reader and haven’t yet sampled book one, but I recommend going and listening to them in order - you won’t be disappointed. I find myself pitying Lord Yamada for all his demons, yet his demons are what makes him who he is, and essentially it is Lord Yamada who keeps the story going, for he is far from the type to simply give up when the going gets rough, despite all his other flaws. I also enjoy his interactions with Kanamore and Kenji, and look forward to the next book in the series.

Intriguing

I really loved how the author wove historical facts about empires and society of the period with fictional details that bring the history to life. The narrator has a bewitching voice that drew me into the story and made me feel a part of it. I look forward to hearing more of this series and this author.

bringing history and lore together for a beautiful story
