Resumen del Editor

2019 Amazon.com Best Books of the Year

This program is read by the author.

In We Are the Weather, Jonathan Safran Foer explores the central global dilemma of our time in a surprising, deeply personal, and urgent new way.

Some people reject the fact, overwhelmingly supported by scientists, that our planet is warming because of human activity. But do those of us who accept the reality of human-caused climate change truly believe it? If we did, surely we would be roused to act on what we know. Will future generations distinguish between those who didn’t believe in the science of global warming and those who said they accepted the science but failed to change their lives in response?

The task of saving the planet will involve a great reckoning with ourselves - with our all-too-human reluctance to sacrifice immediate comfort for the sake of the future. We have, he reveals, turned our planet into a farm for growing animal products, and the consequences are catastrophic. Only collective action will save our home and way of life. And it all starts with what we eat - and don't eat - for breakfast.

Tackling a global issue at an individual scale
"If you’re anything like me, the 24-hour news cycle coupled with the pervasiveness of social media can elicit feelings of paralysis over some of the more urgent and distressing issues of our time. An issue such as climate change can feel so enormous that it can be hard to feel like anything you do will make a difference. Enter Jonathan Safran Foer’s newest nonfiction listen, We Are the Weather. Filled with intimate personal anecdotes alongside clear and factual examples from when we as humans have come together for the collective good throughout history, Foer insists that individuals can be a part of the solution. Even just the subtitle Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast makes the idea of global environmentalism feel downright—forgive me for this—digestible. As an added bonus, Foer narrates his work in a calm, melodic way while still maintaining the appropriate sense of urgency. Give We Are the Weather a listen if you want to help the planet, change your diet, learn some history, or even if you just like a good author-narrated listen."

Must-Read

Compelling and extremely well-written. The only clearly argued thesis on the need to reduce meat consumption that has motivated me and I’ve long recycled, only supported sustainable brands, and do whatever I can to eliminate my own plastic use and overall waste.

I believe

I liked the mental and emotional dialogue… the logical arguments, and the information regarding the climate change.

Facing the reality head on

I always liked to recognize myself as someone who cares about climate change issues but there has always been a sense that my action and my belief system is incongruent. This book is written in such a potent way through self reflection and rationally thinking through our behavior as a society. I am convinced.

First JSF book I didn't enjoy

Couldn't seem to decide what this book wanted to be. An explanation and call to action or a reminiscence of humans and family. It failed in whichever it was intended to be.

A life-changing book.

The number of times I have quoted this book is nothing next to the number of times I've considered this book and went back to it for information.
The notion of "we can't see what we don't want to believe - so how CAN we create behavioral change?" is extremely important, and the responsibility - and feasibility - of each and every one of us changing what we (like to) think of as "inevitable" is crucial. I recommend listening to it, having everyone else listen to it, putting it on curriculums and whatnot. Thankfully, it's written eloquently and it is very engaging and interesting, so it's not like you are committing to an important lecture you need to push through.

Mixed feelings

I enjoyed the story that Foer told and returned back to throughout this book;; And how he woke his own families story into his message. However, I don’t think he dwelt on the subject of this book long enough. I was expecting more discussion about food, food choices, and practical steps to achieving the goal of no animal products before dinner. I also don’t think that solution is a one size fits all.He spent no time exploring possible alternatives, Like eating vegan for dinner and having meat for breakfast or lunch. He didn’t broach the subject of small, humane farms, or eating locally. He just presents the one idea, but doesn’t expand on it at all. I was not convinced.

Brilliant and haunting. Please read this book.

Brilliant and haunting. I laughed and I cried. I paused and looked in the mirror. I read some more and wept again.

Preachy and sometimes esoteric

Everything he says is relevant to our planet .. it's just that it's not very compelling.
