From the author of the connected universe of the Cosmere comes the standalone novel from which spring characters who later play roles in the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive.

In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren's capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy. But with one princess wed to the God King of their nation's enemies in a bid for peace, the other finds she must rely on Breath-using mercenaries to try to rescue her sister from her monstrous husband.

Lightsong the Bold, a lesser god who doubts his own religion, starts investigating mysterious murders in the Court of Gods and uncovers haunting clues to his own forgotten past. He is one of four gods who controls the army of Awakened Lifeless soldiers, and one faction is inciting an invasion of Idris despite the marriage treaty. Vasher―wielder of the sapient sword Nightblood―works behind the scenes against the declaration of war, but Lightsong's visions of bloodshed prophesy its inevitability. Can the new queen, unaware of her sister's imminent rescue attempt, persuade Lightsong and also somehow get through to the aloof God King―who she has been forbidden to speak to or even look in the eyes―before her homeland is destroyed?

great story. unfortunately whoever edited the story together allowed several spots where its different takes of the same scene. so you end up hearing several sentences repeat in maybe a different tone of voice or sometimes it just sounds like the same exact recordings just played twice.

several mistakes

Your copy and paste of the slurping noise for 3 minutes was excessive and annoying.

Really wanted to like this. I was excited about being able to listen to a Cosmere novel with a dramatic performance, but this was horribly implemented. Sound effects are low quality and SOOOO repetitive it drives me crazy. For instance, whenever a character is walking they play the exact same 5 sound fast paced “walking” track of what I assume is supposed to be clothes rustling or plants brushing past legs regardless of what is happening in the story. Walking through crowded market in a long dress, same sounds. Walking naked across a black tile floor, same sounds. Slow stroll through a peaceful garden in trousers, same sounds.
The same goes for the backing music. All seems to be very short compositions on a loop with almost no regard for the activity taking place.
Full on AI would have been better. Would at least have gotten it right occasionally.
Narration on its own is actually fairly solid, so it’s the only reason for two stars.
Vocal editing had to be exclusively AI. I’m only halfway through pt1 and there’s already 4 instances I’ve noticed where a full line is repeated for no reason. All places where there’s no possible use of duplicated phrase use to make a point.

Story has 4 stars so far because it’s exceed my, admittedly low, expectations and I am counting on a quality Sanderson back half.

Terrible sound effects, music, and vocal editing ruin an otherwise solid performance.

Loving the book so far and the performances are great. However, theres one particular scene in a bar where there is drinking audio played every 10 seconds or so, and it just sounds like the same loud repeated noise every time. Took me out of that specific chapter.

Good story with some minor issues

Sounds like it wasn’t edited really well. There’s parts where the voice actors repeat the exact same line. It happens more than once across the novel

Repeated dialogue

The performance was good overall. There were some small annoyances though. They pronounce some of the names differently than the official audiobook, and I counted at least 3 separate instances where the narrators read the same passage multiple times in a row.

I've listened to other works of theirs and those didn't have the same issue, so maybe the editing for the repeated parts was simply done poorly.

Good overall with some minor flaws

The story is potentially terrific.

The production is ghastly.

The sound effects overwhelm the gist of the story. At one stage in the story there is a person slurping from a glass every few seconds. This isn't reality.

The director, producer and production team need to get back to basics. They need to spend a couple of years in the drama studios of the BBC, SABC, ABC, etc.

Sorry Brandon, but this is the worst of your Audible.com stable. Rather stick with Kate and Michael.

Yours faithfully,
A massive fan of yours.

Great story. Terrible production.
