LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. These men were good because they had to be to survive.

1978 - a chance meeting on a remote military airbase between two Green Berets involved in the same operation leads to a partnership that will last over 40 years. Four years after that meeting, Nick Brokhausen and Jeff Miller leave the service within a few weeks of each other and begin an odyssey that takes them to dozens of countries on five continents.
Along with a small coterie of fellow former Special Operations and intelligence community veterans like Penguini, Max, Reek, The Spider Woman and a score of others - some heroes and some villains - they undertake a variety of missions for the government, other governments, large multinational corporations mostly in the aerospace or resource development industries, and occasionally just for suffering individuals who cannot find help anywhere else. LRPs were all volunteers. They were in the spine-tingling, brain-twisting, nerve-wracking business of Long Range Patrolling. They varied in age from eighteen to thirty. These men operated in precision movements, like walking through a jungle quietly and being able to tell whether a man or an animal is moving through the brush without seeing the cause of movement. They could sit in an ambush for hours without moving a muscle except to ease the safety off the automatic weapon in their hand at the first sign of trouble. These men were good because they had to be to survive.

Interesting stories
I think Uncle Nick could have made several books out of this one if he would have been more detailed on the stuff they were pulling. Narrator was good, the one from the first two books should have done this one. Who knows the reason why he didn’t. Uncle Nick knows.

After listening to We Few and Whispers in the Tall Grass I wanted more. Vagabonds was terrific! The stories are exciting, incredible, fascinating, and much more. Nick Brockhausen and his compatriot Jeff Miller have entertained me to no end. Well done.

Crazy life
I listened to “We Few” and “Whispers in the Tall Grass” first. This is not on the same level as those books. This book feels more reserved, like there was a lot of detail left out. I’m sure this is to protect their own hides but makes for a not spectacular book.

Brokhausen at his best.
Google Nick Brokhausen and listen to a few interviews. Go to SOGcast and listen to his episode. Even better listen to his first two books and then get this one. Context is everything. You get his same with this book but the landscape changes considerably. What’s a battle hardened warrior to do when there is no war going on? What damages do they live with? What fun will they have? It’s all here.

Why change the narration?!?!?
This series is by far one of the best series I’ve listened to on the topic. The accounts and personal thoughts of the author as things are happening around him are spot on. I listened to all three books almost in one setting as I could relate very closely to the author’s mindset through my own combat experiences. The first two books had a very appropriate narrator, although listening to the author in various settings I wish he would have done it himself as he is a great speaker and recounts his experiences in a compelling and engaging manner. The narrator in this book is very off putting and in my opinion takes away from the awesome material that he is reading. Overall, and despite the crappy narration, this book is a must listen and if you are in the same boat as me, a must read as you can do that in whatever voice you want. I chose that of the author. The author has recently done at least one podcast in the form of the SOG Cast that I would highly recommend as the author does an outstanding job.
