**Break Free from the Lies That Have Kept You Bound**

For years, you may have believed that God speaks to women only through men, that "children obey your parents" means lifelong submission, or that questioning church authority is rebellion against God Himself.

These widely-taught doctrines have kept believers trapped in fear, guilt, and silence.

But these teachings aren't biblical.

In Untwisting Scriptures That Were Used to Tie You Up, Gag You, and Tangle Your Mind, biblical scholar and abuse advocate Rebecca Davis tackles the false doctrines at the heart of patriarchal and authoritarian church systems. Through meticulous examination of Greek words, historical context, and full Scripture passages, she exposes how these teachings replace Jesus Christ with human control...and what the Bible really says.

What you'll discover:

  • Women and adult children CAN seek God directly: Break free from the lie that you need a father, husband, or pastor as an intermediary between you and Jesus Christ.
  • What "Children obey your parents" actually means: Learn why this command doesn't apply to adult life decisions or abusive situations, and when God calls you to stand firm.
  • The truth about the "umbrella of authority" teaching: See why this popular Bill Gothard doctrine is completely unbiblical and how stepping out from false "protective coverings" leads to experiencing God's grace directly.
  • What Hebrews 13:17 really says about church authority: Understand how this verse has been twisted and what biblical church leadership actually looks like.
  • You can leave patriarchy WITHOUT leaving Jesus: Discover the path to genuine faith free from man-made bondage while still following Christ.

Discussion guides available free of charge at the heresthejoy website.

Scriptures can be untwisted. You can move from bondage under human authority to freedom in direct relationship with Jesus Christ.

THANK YOU for your courage and compassion. I was one who grew up in a home of the matriarchy of patriarchy

I found the narration a little off putting at first but glad I listened to the whole book. I wasn’t as familiar with the patriarchal movement but knew there were families like this out there. I was surprised by how much of this twisted teaching was in my own church I used to be heavily involved in. I had 2 church leaders use the umbrella illustration with me and my ex husband when there was abuse in my home. Somehow my lack of submission was causing the stress leading to his abusive behavior. This church was no isolated cult but a very mainstream conservative church. I did eventually sort these things out with my own study of scripture and through prayer. I did find my way out of the abuse. But it is good to hear others who also see the true Jesus of the Scriptures. Get past the over dramatized narration at first. The message is worth listening to.

My only complaint in this is she puts a wrong emphasis on the NT as if the OT is inferior and less important. While I agree that we are under a better covenant, all Scripture is God breathed and useful for instruction. Most of the NT wasn’t written yet when that statement was made and referred to the OT. It was actually the OT that was most helpful for me to recognize that God made provision for women to leave abusive marriages. So read the whole Bible. Some things are more clear in the OT than the NT. But it is all cohesive.

Very needed to address twisted views of authority

If you have been steeped in the patriarchal movement, it is so hard to see Scriptures in their proper light. This series is so helpful. Highly recommend.

Another important book for those coming out of the patriarchal movement

This book opened my eyes to the many errors I had bought into as a young mother and homeschooling mom.
