Resumen del Editor

The small, rural northeast Texas community of Center Springs has seen its share of troubles during the 1960s, everything from kidnapping and murder to bank robbery. By 1968, the residents think life has finally quieted down, but they find their peaceful way of life is quickly spinning out of control as a decades-long family feud between the Clays and Mayfields once again flares to life.

Fourteen-year-old Top Parker, who lives with his grandparents, Constable Ned Parker and Miss Becky, in a little farmhouse near the Red River, is caught up in another adult situation sparked by a mysterious fatal car accident involving the white mayor of Chisum and his black female assistant. Questions and accusations arise about their relationship as the families wreak vengeance on each other.

But what is the significance of a man calling himself the Wraith, who moves through the region at will, invading homes and watching the Parkers? What is Maggie Clay's secret - that she is half white and married to a black man with a criminal past? And was Mayor Frank Clay, the supposed only bright spot in a dark and cruel family, really what everyone thought he was?

It's a busy time for Sheriff Cody Parker, who finds himself a possible suspect in the murder of several residents. He takes the advice from his deputy, John Washington, and removes himself from the investigation, giving free reign to both John and Deputy Anna Sloan as they try to unravel the answers by following different paths.

The ending will leave you staggered, as the families clash on a small battlefield and the killer is finally revealed in a most unexpected way.

These aren't the 1960s that most Baby Boomers remember.

Quality Rebound

After several somewhat disappointing books, this book is much stronger.

The young narrator is not an afterthought to the main plot, and there is good character development throughout. The world of NE Texas in the '60s again shines through, and the plot is well handled.

Excellent Finale to the Series

The last in the Red River Mysteries is full of everything that actually shaped the late 1960s: rock and roll, racial strife, and teenage angst. Top and Pepper's old friend, Mark is back, his story hitting you like a sucker punch to the gut. But Constable Ned Parker and Miss Becky won't let Mark down, and he has a home with them. Meanwhile everyone is stumped by the wreck that killed the mayor of Chisum and his assistant, igniting the old feud between the Clays and Mayfields. Evil is afoot in the small town of Center Springs, Texas once again and he's calling himself the Wraith. I really hate to see this series come to an end. I've laughed; I've cried; I've identified with these folks on so many levels, growing up in the 60s. And most of all I've LOVED these folks. I felt for Top, hobbling around on that hurt foot at the carnival. The ending was SO good. Don't miss this one!

Excellent!!!!

Would you consider the audio edition of Unraveled to be better than the print version?

Did not read it

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the entire series and was sad when it ended. Every story held my attention and that's not an easy thing for me. I hope Reavis Z Wortham continues the series.

What about Traber Burns’s performance did you like?

He was perfect with every character. His delivery and contrast between male, female, young or old doesn't seem possible to have come from one man.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and I did as I did with all 6 in the series.

Any additional comments?

I cannot say enough good things about this series all around. Worth every minute and every dollar spent.

Best story in the series so far.

I skipped Dark Places in the series and went on to Unraveled. Mark is back and the Parker clan couldn't be happier until a car goes off the side of the road killing its occupants, a Clay and a Mayfield. That fast, an old feud is back on. In the week that follows, the little town of Center Springs has more fights and bodies than it can keep up with. Cody, now the sheriff, is directing things from the sidelines. His pen was found by the first body. Someone wants him blamed.

We get to see more of Norma Faye in this story, which I'm glad for. They've done a lot of talking about her but not much showing. Mark Lightfoot is back, another character I'm happy to see. This story deals with unfinished business, in the form of a feud and in Cody and Norma Faye's personal life. Those kinds of things always seems to come back around until they're dealt with.

As always, I love this narrator. Perfect choice for the story.

ALWAYS ENTERTAINING

Love the Red River Series. The narrator does a fabulous job and has the perfect sound in his voice to believe he if from East Texas in the 1960’s.
Reavis Wortham never disappoints. Keeps my attention, always. He is quit the story teller, and adds so much detail I can see it in my mind!

Unraveled

Love the "country" setting of this series. Reavis Wortham does a great job of making the setting a "character" in his novels. Takes me back to the mid 1960's to early '70's growing up not too far from there.
This one quite fast-paced and full of action.
