Trapped among the travelers (who were, quite possibly, the model for Chaucer’s famous story cycle, The Canterbury Tales), and tripped up by a series of murders in the cathedral, Crispin has to uncover a hidden heretic and a killer before his friend Chaucer, carefully framed for the murders, is hanged for someone else’s crimes.

Chaucer helps us learn more about Crispin
This was a treat for a Canterbury Tales lover such as I. Several pilgrims of the Tales make clever appearances.
Geoffrey Chaucer, himself, enters and helps Crispin confront his demons. Chaucer was such a remarkable man in real life that I'm convinced he would have acted very like Mme. Westerson has written him. I congratulate her.
Jack has a growth spurt in more ways than one and the bond between Master Crispin and Apprentice Jack is sealed.
In Crispin, we have a likable hero with realistically human flaws making him someone we can both relate to and root for.
