If you're constantly feeling on edge, forever working to appease your spouse to little avail and feel like you're constantly being chipped away at with their abusive behavior, then I can understand how emotionally shattering it feels to live this way. If, in the same breath, it breaks your heart to even consider leaving them because you can't imagine life without them, then I can understand that feeling too - because I was trauma bonded to my abusive ex.

The day we met in October of 1997, I was working at the District Court in Traverse City, Michigan as a Deputy Clerk. I loved my job. It was extremely satisfying and interesting with constant interaction with all walks of life, including people on either end of the judicial spectrum and many in between. Suddenly, there he was. Tall, handsome, and looking so impressive and important in his Michigan State Police uniform with his hat, gun belt, and badge. He was extremely friendly and upbeat, smiling profusely. Best of all, he, too, was unattached. What could go wrong?

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

A powerful memoir that can change your life!
I love how this is not only a self- help audiobook but also a memoir that tells a personal journey. It's a truly unique guide to looking into why some women keep attracting the wrong type of man. It forced me to look back into my past experiences and realise the things I need to do to not keep making the same mistakes. I really admire the author's honestly and transparency as it can't always be easy to express so much of yourself on paper or out loud for the world to hear.
After listening to her story and guidance, I feel so much more self confident going forward in my relationships. I know the warning signs and dating patterns and I have a new way of seeing red flags when it comes to a toxic relationship. I am in a happy marriage myself but I have friends who can benefit so much from this audiobook and I would strongly recommend it to any woman who feels like they are trapped or being verbally or physically abused by a man or even another women. This is a truly honest memoir that could help so many rediscover themselves.

An Extraordinary Journey We Can All Learn From
This book is well written, captivating, and intense. I admire the courage of this woman who lived through so much and has the desire to relive it by talking about it in this book. It feels as she wants to help others. I believe she is helping others with her book because when women or men are going through or have gone through abuse such as this woman, it seems as if we are trapped, cannot talk about it, and will never have a life free of the abuse because we don't know how to escape it. I am very grateful to have listened to her story as it brought a lot of clarity to my own life.

intense, thoughtful & moving read
This is a great listen for anyone who has been in a relationship that didn't work out. The author's personal anecdotes and experience make this an emotional and rewarding read. It is so helpful to hear another person's story, especially when it is told in such a vulnerable way.
Dating patterns, getting to know the way you form relationships, and knowing what to look out for in a partner are all so important when trying to find meaningful and healthy love. All of these aspects are discussed, and the book is filled with advice. Highly recommend it! A very insightful, moving read.

Packed with power
Since the beginning, I was hooked. This audiobook rings with truth and shows the lessons that come from the pain we face in life. I’d recommend this to everyone as there needs to be a deeper understanding of trauma in relationships, and the treatments of women, and more awareness on these subjects so that we can find the tools to change them and creating beautiful loving connections and feel safe as lovers and as individuals.

Intensely Thought Provoking
In this riveting memoir the author teaches women how to catch the common patterns and signs of abuse, so that they can stop the dangerous cycle of entering toxic relationships. She does so by describing various life experiences that paint a picture of how she had to free herself from this very cycle. This memoir was very well written, and I often found the author’s words to be very poignant. Any woman can walk out of this novel with something, whether they are victims of abuse or not.

Intense!
The author's gripping story brought me back to a time when a relative went through the same experiences. No one outside of these situations know what it is like to the person who is living through it daily. Experiences like this impact every single aspect of life, including the people around us...the children, the immediate family, and the community in general because it robs the individual of the opportunity to shine and be the best version of themselves. The sad part is that society sometimes turn a blind eye or, the people who are supposed to help sometimes are not trained correctly and at times make the situation worse. Kudos to the writer for being so vulnerable and giving voice to the many voiceless women out there who will use your story to gain the courage they need to stand. Good job!

Powerful memoir
This is a really powerful memoir. I was very impressed with how the author reflects on what she went through and the strategies one needs to deal with the trauma she suffered. Abusive relationships are unfortunately very prevalent in today’s society, and this book is a great reminder that it is never too late to change your circumstances and alter your path. Very courageous insights are revealed, and the whole book is narrated clearly and easy to follow. Well done to the author.

Very powerful book
This is a great book with a powerful message. This book follows a woman’s journey through life. She suffers abuse at the hands of men. This book shows us that there can be a way out of the cycle of abuse. Women need to realize their worth and stop following the same patterns of abuse in their relationships. I highly recommend this book. If anyone is going this in their life, they could benefit from reading this book.

Trauma is an unseen culprit!
This story is, unfortunately, a common thing in young women's lives.
The author's bravery to relive these traumatic memories is something admire, telling her story will help another to overcome and realize their own traumas.
Once you are able to recognize that your unresolved past trauma is ruining your current life, your on your way to changing it up!
This brings to light how important it is to protect our youth from predators, keep a close eye on behavior changes, pay attention to who is around your children and where.
Even family members can be prey on our children, make the discussion of inappropriateness by anyone an open one so your child feels comfortable talking to you about these things.
I am in awe of the authors courage! Definitely recommend!
