A Farewell Flight: When Fiction Takes a Political
For a devoted aviation enthusiast, Wisconsin resident, and EAA member like myself, Mr. Seaborne's series has been a cherished companion. Each installment was eagerly anticipated, a welcome dive into the world of flight. However, with the release of what I suspect is the author's final work, that journey comes to an abrupt and disappointing end.
Up until the closing chapters, Seaborne's storytelling remained engaging, weaving intricate narratives that resonated with his knowledgeable readership. But then, the narrative took an unexpected and, frankly, unwelcome turn. A thinly veiled political agenda emerged, casting a shadow over the previously enjoyable experience. The character of "Senator Johnny," a transparent stand-in for Senator Ron Johnson, along with references to Oshkosh Trucks and the senator's district, felt jarringly out of place.
While I appreciate the author's attempt at subtlety, cleverly masking the senator's name, the references were unmistakable to anyone familiar with Wisconsin politics. For readers outside the state, these allusions might be lost, but for those of us within, they were glaringly obvious.
I must commend Seaborne's restraint in reserving this political commentary for the book's conclusion. It minimized the damage, preventing the entire narrative from being tainted. However, the inclusion itself was unnecessary and ultimately detrimental. It added nothing to the story's depth or complexity, serving only to alienate a segment of his dedicated audience.
One can only assume that Mr. Seaborne's editors, aware of the potential backlash, likely cautioned him against this political foray. Yet, the choice was made, and the consequences are clear.
It's with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to a series I once held in high regard. While I'm grateful for the previous installments, this final act leaves a sour taste. I sincerely hope the author's financial gains from these books will contribute to his chosen causes. However, it's a pity that a promising series had to conclude on such a divisive note. I will no longer be following Mr. Seaborne's work.
POINT OF CLARIFICATION: Amazon's rating system is clearly flawed. I rated this item 1 star overall, 5 stars for performance, and 1 star for story. Yet, Amazon calculated an average of 4 stars. To accurately reflect my overall dissatisfaction, I'm forced to unfairly reduce the performance rating to 1 star, just to bring the average down. This system doesn't accurately represent my experience
