Scarred by her past; defined by her future.
Eva is a herd mistress without a herd. A tagalong by her own definition. Not thrown away by her people, but rather someone who created a new life for herself when the old one died.
When she rescues one of the mysterious winged horses, a creature straight out of myth, from those who would enslave him, Eva opens the door to something her chosen people want more than anything else. An alliance.
Now, sent deep into the Highlands and guarded by one of the Warlord's most trusted warriors, Eva will have to brave the terrors that wait there. Someone is sowing the seeds of dissent upon which war turns. Failure will lead to death, but success may bring revelations she's not ready to face.
The balance of power is shifting in the Broken Lands. Those who survive will need to adapt quickly to the ever-changing landscape. Choosing her friends wisely has never been so important.

There were some excellent new Mythologicals, such as the Kyrons (Pegasus-like horses, but bloodthirstier), plant people, or my favorite: the multi-tailed fire Fox. There were even better intrigues, alliances, and apocalyptic horrors.
Of course, there were still minor annoyances, like the author’s tendency to use merely the specter of a villain who only presents at the very end (and is too easily dispatched) or how the danger to Eva is men threatening her with sexual harm (and this happens more than once). 🙄 There’s the ongoing illogic of the Trateri taking slaves and thinking it’s okay because if they’re good slaves they could eventually become masters, which would have been more palatable if the Trateri better explained their process of domination and assimilation. But, no, the Trateri don’t explain themselves or apologize, which brings me to my biggest annoyance here: so much of the conflict is exacerbated by failures to communicate or treat different peoples/beings with respect.
Still, more than any of the prior books, the annoyances and flaws had more of a point and even provided a more meaningful arc for several of the characters. Although there’s a Flash Gordon coda to cue up book 5, this book provides a contained mystery and romance. You also don’t need to listen to the prior books to enjoy this. You might even enjoy this more without having to trudge through the more toxic trilogy. This was definitely my favorite of the bunch,
Best of the five books- practically a standalone

Eva was the horse mistress that Shea helped out in one of the previous books. She stood out to me because she was similar to Shea in her courage and outspokenness. Well it turns out she is a little more special than the average person.
This was her journey. In this book we follow her as she discovers just what she can do and how her abilities can help the Trateri. Also, along the way she grows closer to the grumpy Caden. And we see a side of him that’s not so serious or grumpy. It was nice to see him smile and make a joke.
I’m so sad this series is over I don’t want to stop living in the Trateri world. I want to keep reading about these Alpha warriors and the women they fall in love with.
Didn’t want it to end

I do recommend reading the Broken Lands first as this picks up shortly after that leaves off and you might be just a bit lost otherwise though you probably COULD read this stand alone there is no way you would regret reading the broken lands first. Many of the same faces appear and we get to know them. The secondary character develop along side the primary characters.
I felt that the end left open the possibility for Eva and Caden’s story to continue but this could stand alone too. There is an HEA but it’s a little abrupt. I definitely wanted more but that’s not a bad thing and in the end it was a really fun, satisfying, and at times emotional read. I loved every moment!
The narration was very well done with perfectly done action and a variety of voices for all the different players.
Beautiful continuation of Broken Lands series can stand on its own!

This story features Eva, the horse mistress included 2-3x in the previous books, and Caden, the Commander of the Trateri. When Eva rescues a Mythical, it is revealed that Eva has more talents than even she knew. Eva is joined by Caden and Darius in traveling further into the Highlands in hopes of forming an alliance, but everyone is at risk with the hidden agendas of the mythical and the humans.
Lewis has a pleasant voice, but I would wish for someone with more ability vocalizing multiple voices, including males.
So good to have Eva’s story!
