The Storm's Betrayal was both so, so much better and slightly worse than its predecessor. Gerrit's villain arc was expertly and fabulously done, and it's safe to say this is one of the best executions of the "super evil side" trope I've seen in quite some time. But while I was hoping that we'd moved past the exhausting YA love triangle, Corry L. Lee really leans into it here (especially towards the middle/second half of the novel) and it's DEVASTATING. A glaring spot of mold on an otherwise perfectly wonderful syrniki. My personal theory is that the author's planning an OT3 endgame for Celka, Gerrit, and Filip, but Lee completely forgot to give Filip chemistry with either Celka /or/ Gerrit. On several occasions Celka chalks her feelings for Filip up to 'stupid teenage hormones,' and we're supposed to be invested in these two? I'm not sure why Lee decided to shoehorn an unnecessary love triangle in this otherwise magnum opus, but the fact that this is still an easy 5-star read for me is a testament to the strength of the rest of the novel. I won't hesitate to check out the sequel, even though I pray to the Storm Gods that Lee will finally let the love triangle die.
