When he returns, his friends find him a changed man, and not changed for the better. But Wulfgar's road to redemption is one he must travel on his own, even if it leads to the bottle.

Really Good

Really different from all the other books he's made but still not bad. I still really enjoyed the book even know it's not really about the main character!

Great a Book but I’m burned out

R.A. Salvatore does a great job with all of his books, but after listening to 12 of his books in a row they’re starting to feel monotonous. I’m enjoying them but all of the books feel incredibly similar. I usually read/listen to an entire series such as the Dresden Files or the king killer chronicles before I move onto a new one... but with there being 18 books ahead of me before I’m caught up I’m considering taking a break. The only thing that really has me considering to keep listening is perhaps is Jarlaxle.

oh Wulgar.......

straight to the point. at the start of the story I felt sorry for Wulfgar with all the torture he went through in the underworld. Midway through the book I low-key hated him and wanted him to die post haste, but by the end of the book I was thumping my chest in respect for him because he became the Wulfgar I loved to read about.

Probably should be renamed pain of wulfgar

I thought the book was okay, just completely about wulfgar almost no Drizzt. In fact, I dont think there's a chapter's worth of him in there

Lovin' this series!!!

Well written and enjoying the narrator very much. Can't get much better unless it's Tolkien!

Good overall; Not good in places.

There's a side plot of small fiefdom string throughout that, while I'm glad it wraps up wonderfully, is just a boring (almost painful) slog distracting from anything interesting for the first 2/3 of the book

Unusual episode in the universe of Drizzt

The Spine of the World is an unusual entry in the Legend of Drizzt series in that, except for Drizzt’s philosophical comments between sections of the book, Drizzt is only included in this book by reference. It is meant to be mostly a tale of Wulfgar’s continuing recovery from his time in the abyss with the demon Ertu.

Most of it, frankly, doesn’t look much like recovery. In the previous book, Wulfgar discovered that if he drank enough to pass out he could make it through the night without returning to the abyss in nightmares. Now he is continuing on this path, only continually getting worse. He has made enemies in his bouncer job, and they begin to harass him constantly, causing so much damage to the bar where he works that it finally costs him his job. And on top of that, somebody steals his Warhammer, Aegis Fang. Pretty soon after that, Captain Dudermont of the Sea Sprite is attacked in another bar, and Wulfgar and his pal Morik the Rogue are framed and put into the city dungeon where it looks as if they will be executed.

In the meantime, in a small village not far away, we are introduced to a new set of characters we haven’t previously met. It’s a complicated story for the young peasant girl Meralda Ganderlay, but as a result of it she has a chance to give Wulfgar perhaps his first clue as to how he can begin to overcome the aftereffects of his time in the abyss.

As always, Victor Bevine does an excellent job with the narration.
