Resumen del Editor

Irony is winning the Powerball lottery six months before the world's economies melt down. The Shelter tells the story of a family who wins $27 million in the lottery. They pull up roots and move to Nashville where they buy a large home bordered by three farms. With the money in hand and the world's economies in the process of melting down, they purchase the three farms and the 7,000 square foot house. The farms are able to provide food when the economies collapse. The house is large enough to hold all of their extended family. To ensure their survival, Jay decides to build a large shelter under the farmland. Jay befriends the local Mafia 'Don', Tony, who helps him in exchange for a ticket in the shelter. Book one tells the story of Jay and Lacy, winning the lottery, their move to Nashville, buying the farms and building the shelter while the world goes to hell around them. The world starts to melt down when the people of Greece elect a new Prime Minister, who defaults on their loans to Germany. The EU falls apart when the other European Nations follow Greece's lead. China demands payment of its debt from America or the state of Hawaii. The President increases taxes to raise the $1.4 trillion needed to pay China back, putting enormous stress on the American economy. Russia adds gasoline to the fire by dumping their dollars. Russia helps destabilize the EU so they can invade by offering humanitarian aid. When the American economy collapses, distribution of food stops, and starvation becomes a real problem. The cities explode in violence due to the lack of food and clean water. As the insanity spreads, Jay builds a shelter complex to house over 40 people for more than a year without surfacing. A shelter, he thinks, is an insurance policy, one he hopes he'll never have to use. A shelter complex he and his neighbors, need in order to survive an invasion of their farms. All of their winnings are worthless when the only real currency is a loaf of bread and a bottle of clean water.

Great story!

Loved the detail and the raw honesty of the book. Said all the things most don't want to hear. Only issue was with many lines being repeated throughout the book during the narration. But the performance was excellent!

A good book in print.

I read and enjoyed the kindle edition but the audible version is an editing disaster...the narrator does a good enough job but the editing is choppy and lines repeat among other problems.
Even with the editing issues it's a worthy book that held my interest even through the problems. If you're one of those people who can't handle mistakes in editing you might ait for an updated version. There are several books in the series and this is the first and only on audible at the moment. I hope more come and the editing improves.

Fox Network Extremist Thinking

The overall story line while improbable is quite good and I look forward to book two. The political commentary and anti Obama sentiments were comically delightful. The editing of the audiobook was unprofessional. I don't think that the editors listened to the finished product...and shame on them for that.

Both amusing and totally rediculous

Would you try another book from Ira Tabankin and/or Anthony Bowling?

I may try another book, itll be a while though, i can only take some much extreme right wing ranting.

Would you recommend The Shelter, Book 1 to your friends? Why or why not?

No I would not recommenf this to a friend as I wouldnt want them to look at me like a crazy person.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was fine.

Do you think The Shelter, Book 1 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

The shelter is written so that you know itll end when time does.

Any additional comments?

I love prepper , horror, scifi, end of the world books. This firmly falls into the prepper genre. The story started very interesting, soon it got pie in the sky unbeliveable, but still enjoyable. I knew it was going to be "one of those books" when 8 minutes in it began bashing liberals and obama. Still I read on because I dont really care about politics one way or the other. By the 4 hour mark though he turned the liberal govenrment into some antichrist american hating association which hours later has truly worn on my psyche. If this was just a prepper book Id go for the sequel, but it really started going full on hate fest after a while. Made me feel kinda dirty. If your a liberal youll hate it, if your a conservative youll probably love it. If you dont care one way or the other, its probably best to avoid the book.

Oh Really?

The concept of winning a lottery and building a survival shelter for family and friends to mainly express your dislike of the Obama Administration was so sad. This opposition distracted from a good story line. Also, there were some editorial mistakes which is unusual for audio books. Maybe in Book 2 we actually won't hear about Obama and learn more about the families living in the shelter for survival. Finally keep the narrator, he did a good job.

Thanks Obama

Any additional comments?

Great story concept but written like a Rush Limbaugh script. Way to political and the editing is horrible

not very good

The story is poorly organized and illogical. Many lines are repeated- obviously it was not edited by a professional.

Not a survival story.

What I was hoping for was: "the story of Jay and Lacy, winning the lottery, their move to Nashville, buying the farms and building the shelter while the world goes to hell around them."

What I read was - a bit of survival story, and a lot of detailed descriptions on how Obama would screw up America while the world economies melted. OBAMA would put aside the constitution. OBAMA ..... ack!!! You don't like him - no problem - but write it in a blog, or title your book more obviously like "This is what needs to be done when Obama screws up America" - then I would have known what the book was really about so I could decide if that's what I wanted to read or not.

Had I wanted to hear more political opinions, I would have checked my Facebook feed - not spent my money on a book claiming to be "sci-fi contemporary" .
