Resumen del Editor

In this highly anticipated new novel, Diana Gabaldon brings back one of her most compelling characters: the unforgettable Lord John Grey - soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Set in the heart of the 18th century, Lord John's world is one of mystery and menace. Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John's secret and public lives.

Capturing the lonely, tormented, and courageous career of a man who fights for his crown, his honor, and his own secrets, Diana Gabaldon delivers breathtaking human drama, proving once again that she can bring history to life in a way few novelists ever have.

Great book, just wish for better Jamie narration

Any additional comments?

I’m a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon in all her guises, and this melding of her Lord John and Outlander novels is irresistible for fans of either. I enjoyed having the story told in two voices, but frankly, the choice of Rick Holmes for the Jamie narration was a poor one. I imagine he’s a fine narrator for other material, but his voice is simply Not Jamie. I also question why all the Jamie sections weren’t narrated in a Scottish accent; after all, the point is that they’re from his (Scots) perspective. And, under no circumstances should he ever again do a child’s voice!

Jeff Woodman, on the other hand, did an outstanding job, as he always does with the Lord John books. I’m not especially crazy about his Jamie either, which lacks the warmth and humor that Davina Porter infuses into her Jamie voice, but he is the definitive John Grey and I was very happy listening to him.

better if done by different narrators

If you could sum up The Scottish Prisoner in three words, what would they be?

poor narrators

What did you like best about this story?

A great story from a different point of view, and more insight in to those lost years without Claire.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes ?

no ...................or maybe if they got better with more practice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could not quite past the poor narration

Any additional comments?

they.. the narrators should have listened to Ms Porter's reading of any part of the Outlander series. This would have given them some in sight into what the readers would be expecting. It's a shame a good book was down graded by the reading. The narrator made Jamie seem like mindless Scott.
I just could not see the people in the story like I could with Ms Porter's reading of the original series. If you like this book you need to listen to the complete unabridge Outlander series with a GREAT narrator, Diana Porter.

Fabulous as always

Ms. Gabaldon continues to hold me captive with her excellent work! She is by far the best writer I have ever encountered!!

Good Story, Good Performance

Good story and good performance, but distracting and a little jarring moving between two narrators.

Another Gabaldon Hit!

If you could sum up The Scottish Prisoner in three words, what would they be?

Jamie's Hellwater back-story

What did you like best about this story?

As always the interplay of the characters was the "pager turner" for me. Lord John and his Honor, Hal's impulsiveness and Jamie's love of Willie all combine to make this novel a bridge between the Outlander series and the Lord John books.

What does Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The range and richness of the voices brought the story to life for me. I had a bit of a hard time getting used to a new voice for Jamie, but soon adjusted to the male version of my Scottish friend's brogue. I doubt that I will ever try to read a book by Gabaldon again, I enjoy my audible way too much.

Great read !!! Wonderful complement to Outlander series!

Love all the Lord John books!!! For those of us waiting for another Outlander book the Lord John series is perfect ~ Lord John is engaging as a character and his adventures add explanation to the story line of Outlander.

Another winner by Diana Gabaldon

I enjoyed this book the best out of the John Gray series. I do like John Gray, but I do not believe the writing is the same as the Outlander series in which I love. But I do have to find a new author to love, since I have read all of Diana's books and the 9th book does not have a release date.

Great Narration!

I couldn't believe the negative reviews for the narration of this book. The two narrators worked well together. I love Davina Porter, who narrated all of the Outlander series and thought her performance couldn't be improved upon. The Scottish Prisoner has changed my mind. Jamie's accent in this is wonderful. John Gray's voice sounded great as well. Having men do male voices gives each character more depth. I especially like how the two narrators worked together and were able to do the 'other' voice within their own chapters. There were enough similarities in their voices that the transition didn't stand out too much. I hope that these narrators will be used again. Some people just don't like any changes.
As for the story, I am always happy to learn more details about all of the Outlander character's lives. I especially liked learning more about Hal, Lord John's brother and the small bit about Nessie and Rabbie McNabb. I think they would be interesting characters on their own.
PLEASE give these narrators a chance. Don't let any negative reviews stop you from listening. Ms. Gabaldon creates such loyalty in her readers (I am one) that sometimes any variation at all is hard to get used to. I would like to see these narrators brought in on the Outlander series as well. Davina Porter being the main narrator, of course, and always Claire's voice.

Best LJ book so far! Of course, it's half Jamie!

As an admitted Gabaldon/Porter addict, I have to say that my next read of it will be in the hard book form. While the voice of Lord John seemed natural, the voice of Jamie (by both readers) was painfully horrible; too high, tenuous, boorish, uneducated, so unlike the Jamie that we've fallen in love with in Davina Porter's voice. In spite of that, this was the best Lord John novel so far, probably because Jamie was such an integral part of it. Diana is so good at spinning plots with new twists and this book is no different. I love how she weaves characters in from her other novels. Her writing is so strong that it overrides the negatives in the narrating. Overall, it was worth every penny!
