Acerca de esta escucha

A collection of two stories by beloved Western writer Louis L'Amour.

In "The Sixth Shotgun", Leo Carver has been sentenced to hang for holding up a stage, killing the driver and the guard, and stealing the gold they were transporting. He is convicted despite his protests of innocence, but questions soon arise over whatreally happened.

"The Rider of the Ruby Hills" is the story of Ross Haney, who rides into Ruby Hills country hoping to settledown. What he finds is an intense rivalry between the two big ranches and arustler who is taking full advantage of the situation.

Another thoughtful western with lots of plots and twist. I like the descriptive, geology and creative characters in the story. Oh.

Enjoyable Old Western with curious geology

As a diversion from my normal fare of listening, I downloaded these two Louis L'Amour tales of the old west. I have seen many western films adapted from his works, but have never read or listened to any.

The first story is rather short about a man wrongly accused of killing the driver and the shotgun assistant on a stagecoach. The hombre is certainly not devoid of bad deeds and is an easy target for the crime. What really unravels this mystery is a shotgun count. A fun listen.

The second story which carries the title of the novel is an fashioned western drama with bad guys and good guys struggling over land grabbing, cattle rustling, and confrontation in the old west style. This is pure escapism with no hidden agendas.

Both Grover Gardner and Jim Gough did excellent jobs of bringing the pages to life. If you are a western fan and just want to be entertained, this is your answer. Also, if you are a premium member, then this is part of the Plus Catalogue. Enjoy.

The Rider of the Ruby Hills (prior review)
The Sixth Shotgun
Leo Carver was an outlaw but an outlaw with some moral values in check. Sure, he admitted he stuck up the stage but he would never have shot Mitch Williams or Doc Spender for that matter. There was to be a hanging in Canyon Gap! And there was one.

Truth is a luxury the old can afford!

This is a classic L’Amour tale of the west before there was enough civilization out there to enforce the laws. Ross, the hero, rides into a ranchers’ war with a piece of critical information. He actually owns the deed to the water sources that make it possible for the ranchers to support their cattle. The ranchers are mostly a bunch of honorless criminals who muscled and backstabbed their way into the region and now are trying to muscle their way to being top dog. Naturally, Ross intends to be the one to come out on top. It ends with a nice little almost-court -cene in which people try to figure out what’s really going on.

This volume also includes a nice little mystery called The Sixth Shotgun. Again, a nice little crime drama in which our hero is about to be hung for a murder someone else did. Fortunately, people start asking about where he got the shotgun that committed the crime and what happened to it afterwards. It’s a good introduction to Louis L’Amour.
