Educational

Would you listen to The Problem Is YOU again? Why?

I would and have listened to this book more than once. There are some insightful tips in this book that we all need to hear, whether we think we have the characteristic described or not.

What did you learn from The Problem Is YOU that you would use in your daily life?

The biggest thing I learned is to stop setting goals that are unattainable and to continuously keep believing in myself and push forward.

This Book is Halfway Done

The author did an excellent job of identifying the problems, with very little effort in offering the solutions. He spends a lot of time perfectly describing the issue, the pain associated with it, and potential causes - and then a wisp of time offering super high-level ideas without getting deep into the answers.

John Burke seems to love offering these lists of things to do, but doesn't want to spend the time detailing the items in those lists. A "typical" list item would be something like, "try to be more positive in how you perceive your goals", which leaves the listener saying, "well... duh... AND..?"

The book is 1 hour and 14 minutes. If John could go back and make the solutions and the answers less vague and more concrete and perhaps create a 2 hours and 30 minutes book... then I think he could really have something great here.

I needed this

This is a short and simple book but it is packed with useful information if you find yourself constantly struggling with your relationships. I'm about to restart it and have pen and paper this time.

Good for a quick executive level discussion.

Lots of good points but they are sometimes repeated using different language. Lots of sub-lists which can be a bit hard to follow. First chapter is packed full of info and the following chapters are far shorter. I actually liked that because I can easily go back to the chapter that offers ways to address issues without having to listen to the whole thing again. Overall, I like this book because it is short rather than ten plus hours on the subject. Just a quick primer when you’re in the dumps about habitual self-defeating behavior.

Excellent!

The narrator read to fast. But the content was perfect and the message was blunt and beneficial. Very nice listening!

Honest

A very frank and honest look inside yourself. If this applies to you, try to listen with open mind and actually see how some situations actually apply to your life. Great.

Too Short & Too Simplistic

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure who would benefit from reading this book, as I found it too simplistic and vague, and it didn't dig deep or unveil any real issues I could grasp onto and relate to. I was surprised when the book was over.

What could John Burke have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

This book seemed to me to be more observational, and at that, only observational at a surface level. In other words, anyone could have written the book. It didn't provide any insight or solutions as I expected it to do.

What three words best describe Jason McCoy’s performance?

Really not bad.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Problem Is YOU?

There were no 'scenes'. it was really quite a shallow book, not offering much in the way a self-help book should.

Any additional comments?

A disappointment. Will probably re-listen again, perhaps I was too distracted the first time. Will definitely update my review if I feel otherwise after a second listen.

Fells like a psichology lecture

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

There is nothing new here. This book really won't change your life, is superficial. Maybe a psychology student would find something useful, but it does not give you any sound advice and the cover and title are deceptive.I won't give one star because at least the book is to the point.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

If the author would at least talk about something you can do to overcome the self defeating behavior as the cover suggests it would be much much better. Just knowing how people go on self defeating behavior won't change much.

A waste of time and money

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one I can think of

What was most disappointing about John Burke’s story?

The assembly of words does not a book make. This book is a joke, actually. Here's the kind of sage advice it gives ~ If you're having problems with your relationships, perhaps you should look at them and see what you can do differently to make a change." Really??

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator, to his credit, isn't bad. He just has total crap to work with on this one.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Problem Is YOU?

If I cut out all of the useless, convoluted ramblings, there'd be about 3 pages to the book. It would also be helpful if the author would've tried to assemble the ideas in a logical progression instead of jumping erratically from one subject to the next, with no rhyme or reason.

Any additional comments?

It is a sad trend that some "authors" and I use that term very generously here, are using the tactic of spending 9/10ths of their book to describe or list assorted problems and their possible permutations. But then, they have little or no solutions. THIS is one of those books. I really, REALLY tried to be fair and give it a chance, but finally couldn't take it any more, popped out the CD and threw it in the trash. The correct title to this book should be, "The Problem is This Book". Don't say you weren't warned!
