So begins one of the best-loved and most widely read books in English literature. An acknowledged classic of the heroic Puritan tradition, and a founding text in the development of the English novel, The Pilgrim's Progress has inspired readers for over three centuries. The story of Christian, whose pilgrimage takes him through the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, and the Delectable Mountains, is full of danger and adventure. Together with his trusty companions, Faithful and Hopeful, he encounters many enemies before finally arriving at the Celestial City. John Bunyan's own experience of religious persecution informs his story, but its qualities of psychological realism, and the beauty and simplicity of his prose, give the book universal appeal.

Plagued by spiritual anguish, devout everyman Christian fears his fate in the sinful City of Destruction. He’s told that only by embarking for the Celestial City can he achieve personal salvation. After his wife and children refuse to join him, he sets forth alone into the unknown. Mocked for his faith, tempted at every turn, and heartened by fellow pilgrims, Christian’s winding journey toward grace unfolds. But as he reaches Mount Zion, his family chooses to follow the same treacherous path, hoping to join Christian in the shining light.

Great Story
This is one of most sold books in the world. It was a delight to listen to. I found the older english a little difficult at times but all-in-all a great listen.

Great reader, overly quaint story
I know it's a classic, but I found it rather too quaint for my taste. I listened to it in preparation for Geraldine Brooks' Pulizer Prize-winning novel, March, however, and I'm very glad I did, as my reading of the latter was much improved thereby. Sandra Burr's performance was perfect.

Pilgrim's Progress Parts 1 & 2 in Original English
Because Part 2, the story of Christiana, Christian's wife, is equally important, I created this review just to clarify this version. The narrator is excellent making the antique English easy to listen to with his inflection and smooth delivery. God inspired John Bunyan with this story to speak to all of his children. Enjoy.

Oldie but Goodie
A friend of mine in recovery from alcoholism recommended this book stating that the many obstacles that the spiritual pilgrims in this story faced are the the same ones he faced on his journey to sobriety. I found this story to be a fabulous way to dramatize the spiritual path of Christians.
