In the person of Jesus Christ, we observe many excellent qualities coming together. Many of his qualities seem to be very different from one another, such as power and humility, or sovereignty over all things and submission to the Father. This diversity leads to two very different scriptural designations for him: Lion and Lamb. In The Excellency of Christ, Jonathan Edwards makes the point that these diverse qualities should move people to admire the Lord Jesus Christ on a high level. Edwards maintains that especially at the cross, we see Christ exhibiting both his powerful lion-like might ...

Jonathan Edwards was a Protestant theologian and a leading revivalist preacher during the Great Awakening. Edwards wrote Freedom of the Will in the 18th century while working as a missionary to a tribe of Housatonic Native Americans in Massachusetts. He carefully drew out the differences of thought between the Calvinist and Arminian theologies and sided with the Calvinist views on humanity's will. Edwards sought to understand God's foreknowledge and how it related to free will and the ability to choose between good and evil.

If God already knows what you'll do tomorrow, did you ever really have a choice? Jonathan Edwards spent his sharpest years answering that, and his answer still unsettles people 270 years later. In 1754, Jonathan Edwards set out to settle this question once and for all, and produced what many still call the most powerful work of philosophical theology ever written in America. Freedom of the Will dismantles a comfortable ...

The Life of David Brainerd: Modernized for Today's Readers David Brainerd died at 29. But his journal went on to change the course of Christian history. Jonathan Edwards read it and published it. One of the most fascinating things about the Bible, is the typology contained in scripture. Stories such as Abraham and Isaac take on a new dimension when we consider the elements of the story that correspond to the crucifixion of Christ. For example, Abraham had one son. God had one begotten Son. Abraham took his son up a hill to be sacrificed. On this day the son carried the wood required to make the sacrifice. We see a parallel in that God saw to it through providence, that his son would thousands of years later, ascend a hill in order to be a sacrifice. On this day he would carry the ...

Though he was orphaned at age 14, repeatedly struck with debilitating illnesses, and unfairly expelled from college, Brainerd allowed nothing to deter him from serving God wholeheartedly. This book not only offers a captivating story, but an uplifting buoy for those who are weary, distant, or discouraged.
