Instant New York Times bestseller!

“A gorgeous, gut-wrenching” (Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author) historical novel about two mothers facing unthinkable choices as the Nazis invade France—from the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Harmel.

Paris, 1939: Young mothers Elise and Juliette become fast friends the day they meet in the beautiful Bois de Boulogne. Though there is a shadow of war creeping across Europe, neither woman suspects that their lives are about to irrevocably change.

When Elise becomes a target of the German occupation, she entrusts Juliette with the most precious thing in her life—her young daughter, playmate to Juliette’s own little girl. But nowhere is safe in war, not even a quiet little bookshop like Juliette’s Librairie des Rêves, and, when a bomb falls on their neighborhood, Juliette’s world is destroyed along with it.

When the war finally ends, Elise returns to reunite with her daughter, only to find her friend’s bookstore reduced to rubble—and Juliette nowhere to be found. What happened to her daughter in those last, terrible moments? Juliette has seemingly vanished without a trace, taking all the answers with her. Elise’s desperate search leads her to New York—and to Juliette—one final, fateful time.

A sweeping celebration of resilience, motherhood, and love, The Paris Daughter is “historical fiction at its best” (Sadeqa Johnson, New York Times bestselling author).

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Powerful, deeply emotional, and sure to be on everyone’s “must read” list." (--New York Times bestselling author Susan Elizabeth Phillips)
"Fascinating, meticulously researched, and utterly unique." (Kelly Rimmer, New York Times bestselling author of THE WARSAW ORPHAN)
"What a triumph! Not since Alice Hoffman's The Dovekeepers, have I read such a spellbinding and immersive tale of a people's will to survive." (Stephanie Dray, NYT Bestselling author of The Women of Chateau Lafayette)
"In this always compelling, sometimes harrowing tale, THE FOREST OF VANISHING STARS draws readers into a singular story of survival and bravery. Set against the backdrop of Eastern Europe during World War II, the resourceful Yona, forced to become expert in the ways of the forest when a sage, prescient elderly woman takes Yona from her German family, must decide whether she'll rise up to claim the destiny foretold about her when faced with a band of Jewish refugees hiding in her beloved woods. Inspiring and gripping." (New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict)
"Unforgettable characters, nail-biting drama and deep emotion that endures long after the final words are forgotten....The Forest of Vanishing Stars is a story that will touch, educate, transform and uplift." (Santa Montefiore)
“With meticulous research and an assured hand, Kristin Harmel once again spotlights French Resistance figures of the Second World War, unique heroes whose bravery and immeasurable sacrifices are too often lost to history. THE BOOK OF LOST NAMES is a fascinating, heartrending page-turner that, like the real-life forgers who inspired the novel, should never be forgotten. A riveting historical tale that I devoured in a single sitting.” (Kristina McMorris, New York Times bestselling author of Sold on a Monday)
“Harmel brilliantly imagines the life of a young Polish-French Jewish woman during the depths of WWII...Harmel movingly illustrates Eva’s courage to risk her own life for others, and all of the characters are portrayed with realistic compassion. This thoughtful work will touch readers with its testament to the endurance of hope."
"Not since “The Nightingale” have I finished a book and been so choked with emotion. Harmel was inspired by the true story of French citizens who fought against evil during WWII with courage and conviction. She shines a brilliant light on those who had their identities erased and lives destroyed, on a country and its people torn apart, and young women like Eva, who risked their lives with everyday acts of epic heroism. Sweeping and magnificent."
(Fiona Davis, national bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue)

Sadly, this book was not for me. To be honest, I didn’t like the sample narration, and usually don’t purchase anything if that’s the case, but I wanted to hear the story and just hoped the performance would improve with time… It never did! As for the story itself, I didn’t feel connected to it nor emotionally invested… Definitely didn’t pull at my heart strings like other books often do. At no point did the tears come. For me, I think it’s time to return this book and find something more suitable.

This was a very interesting storyline that was both engaging and captivating. The narrator did a very good job as well making it very easy to listen to.

As was reading this, I came to a section where the bombing of the bookstore happened, and I was able to predict the outcome of the story from that point on it was very predictable to me. I also thought that they did not develop the character of Lucy‘s mother very well.

Predictable outcome

I like this author. While the story was kinda good. I felt it was way too long and predictable and repetitive. . Although I did learn more about the art world . The audio couldn’t hold my interest . As a mother myself I do know there can be a fine line between healthy even sacrificial mothers love and unhealthy obsession . I’ve listened to the authors other work and really enjoyed it. Great narrator .

I hate giving any review but a perfect one but I can’t this time

Struggled to finish. Kristen read it herself? Too many sentences ended with a rise in the reader's voice as though she was asking us a question. I guessed that if the author was reading it, she was asking us if we could believe what she was laying down. I almost quit halfway through because that inflection pattern was as annoying and irritating as hell!

Narration was grating

Story took way too long to get started, I almost didn’t continue listening. Love this author but this one was just okay.

Very slow
