Resumen del Editor

When wishes are granted, a price must always be paid.

Bullied at school. Abused at home. Davey McKidd has no other choice but to run. He runs until he has nowhere else to go. When a mysterious figure appears, offering him an escape, Davey follows.

Pulled into world he could have only imagined, a place where he is accepted, a place he can call home.

Welcome, to Cardboard City.

Davey is quickly accepted by other runaways. It is a world of dreams. In his moment of bliss, Davey is granted a choice, a sinister temptation, to exact the pains his tormentors caused him and turn it back against them. Forced to face that decision, he begins to question if his newfound paradise, where dreams and reality become one, is possibly a living nightmare.

Davey is about to find that getting everything you want comes at a steep price.

Listen to the standalone short story that sprouted the novel Myrrendryl: Falling Leaves and the Dance of Death.

Wonderful, Powerful Story

Davey’s life is not easy, nor is he loved. Bullies and his abusive father torment Davey daily. Alone, lost, and just wanting to belong, Davey runs away. He doesn’t go far. He encounters other runaways that welcome him happily into their Cardboard City. Davey’s life improved or so he thinks. With every decision, with every wish, there are consequences. Davey just discovered what he sacrificed!

The author, Kirby Lord, designs a story that is captivating and forces one to consider life choices. This reminded me of bits and pieces of the Lord of the Flies and Peter Pan, but with a more realistic foundation to the storyline that allows the listener to relate more closely to Davey and his situation. The characters are well-developed and while disliking the father, one can relate to his sufferings as well – not the father’s behavior but his pain. The story of Davey remains with the listener well after the book ends.

The narrator, Nick Mercer further enhances the storyline with his performance, unique voice, and tonal inflections that bring the story and characters to life. He is perfect for this audiobook!

This is a short listen; it is both entertaining and impactful.
