When The Machine That Changed the World was first published in 1990, Toyota was half the size of General Motors. Twenty years later Toyota passed GM as the world’s largest auto maker. This management classic was the first book to reveal Toyota’s lean production system that is the basis for its enduring success.
Authors Womack, Jones, and Roos provided a comprehensive description of the entire lean system. They exhaustively documented its advantages over the mass production model pioneered by General Motors and predicted that lean production would eventually triumph. Indeed, they argued that it would triumph not just in manufacturing but in every value-creating activity from health care to retail to distribution.

Essential reading for any business person
I don’t write reviews. But this book is so substantive and that it does not reflect the voice of the author but perhaps the greatest industrial, global, well funded study concerning productivity. Listening to the book this book is like taking a walk through enlightenment.

Classic on lean manufacturing.
This book is the classic and needs to be read for everyone who is interested in the evolution and creation of lean manufacturing. The book provides an excellent history of mass production and then explains how lame production came into being. It provides excellent data supporting the benefits of lean manufacturing. It also spent some time on the overall use of lien and other adjacent functions such as research and development. They must read for those Interested in lean.
