Reseñas editoriales

The creator of Sherlock Holmes delivers a classic adventure fantasy in this tale of a trip by journalists, scientists, and adventurers to investigate rumors of dinosaurs on a mysterious plateau deep in a mythical South American jungle. Much fun and over-the-top adventure ensue. The author is ably supported by Glenn McCready, who delivers a narration very much in the nineteenth-century style. He plays up the characters' big personalities and celebrates the rather orotund style of the writing, which isn't as tight as in the Holmes series. Not for modern-fiction-only readers, this collection will appeal most to lovers of nineteenth-century literature.

Resumen del Editor

Here is the precursor to Jurassic Park. Victorian explorers have heard there is a remote plateau where dinosaurs still survive, and a group set outs on a dangerous mission to find out more about it.

Michael Crichton's 1990 sci-fi best seller became a cultural phenomenon with Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster film adaptation. But what are the key differences between the novel and the movie? One of the most beloved sci-fi adventure films ever made, Spielberg's juggernaut Jurassic Park is a feat of animatronic work, impeccable casting, and wildly perfect pacing. No less incredible, still, is the novel on which it's based, Crichton's masterpiece. But just how similar are the two? If you're looking for the major differences between Jurassic Park the book and the movie, we've got you covered.

Takes half of the book for anything to happen

First, the narrator doesn't help matters. He has a dry, old-time English voice, which is rather appropriate if they were trying to replicate the voice used at the time. Nevertheless, it is not a very engaging voice for a modern audience. In addition to that, it takes at least half of the short audiobook for anything really interesting to happen. Then it is mostly calmed down for the last hour or so of the book. So there is roughly 3 hours of good, exciting story. I would recommend a pass on this one for most people.

Excellent performance makes the story great

The narrator was superb in his performance of the characters and dramatizations. Improved an already good adventure novel. Congratulations to him for his good work.

Brilliant narration of a pulp classic

Glen McCready is now one of my favorite narrators. His reading of this classic of pulp fantasy was flawless. It's a fantastic story of adventure in a prehistoric lost land, similar to stories from Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs. One must accept the mores of the author's time, of course, and the British empirical mindset, but it's a fun listen. Highly recommended for families (or anyone) on road trips.

Great classic

I've been enjoying broadening my horizons by listening to classical literature. Just a warning though there are some rather racist statements, character descriptions and words throughout. I understand it is a sign of this books age but it should be made clear to make sure it is listened to in an appropriate setting as well as from proper age group.

great performance

a good book and great performance. it is very, very interesting to get a glimpse of mainstream European thought from the early 20th century and how that contrasts with today

Wanted to Love This

I really wanted to love this book, but I can’t even force myself to finish it. The story is okay and there are some descriptions that were really well crafted, but the whole thing just drags too much, in my opinion. I just couldn’t get into it or connect with any characters. Others may love it, but I’m giving up on it.

Old-time thriller remains highly entertaining today. I will be seeking more Doyle books in the near future.
