first book in a promising series
This is the first book in the DI Tom Stomen series, and he is one of those wonderfully flawed protagonists who make for great detectives. He doesn’t always follow the rules and isn’t necessarily a great team player, yet he genuinely cares about the people around him, which makes him incredibly likable and relatable.
There are a lot of layers to both the crime and the culprit. I had a few suspicions here and there, but Frost’s clever plotting and generous sprinkling of misdirection delivered plenty of surprises!
If you’re looking for a cozy mystery novel, this isn’t it. As advertised, this is a darker, anti-cozy holiday thriller—and Frost delivers! After reading back-to-back cozy mysteries, I needed a change, and this was perfect. I’m excited for more installments in this series!
