The extraordinary new novel in the New York Times best-selling author's acclaimed series about the real Deep South - "a joy ride into the heart of darkness" (The Washington Post).

She was just 17, a high school dropout named Milly Jones, found walking down the middle of the highway, engulfed in flames. Even in a tough Mississippi county like Tibbehah, it shatters the community, and it is up to Sheriff Quinn Colson, back on the job after a year away, and his deputy, Lillie Virgil, to investigate what happened and why. Before long, however, accusations start to fly, national media and federal authorities descend, and what seemed like a senseless act of violence begins to appear like something even more disturbing - with more victims waiting in the shadows.

I have always liked the Quinn Colson series, and find myself enjoying each new book a little more. The characters are really starting to flesh out and develop individuality. I have never, physically been to Mississippi, but I sure feel like I know Tibbehah County. I think Ace Atkins is ready to give Elmore Leonard and Raylan Givens a run for their money!

I have enjoyed each book in this series. It’s good versus bad with a little more added in. I hope someone will make a TV series out of them

One of the best settings for a series. Small town in the Deep South… I am not sure why, but it works and every books keeps getting better.

I enjoy this series very much and each book is better than the one before. I live in the heart of the book's setting and Ace Atkins portrays the area with more authentic characters than most writers dealing with the South. Unfortunately, he does have a tendency to fall back on some too used stereotypes, such as the snake oil preacher and the weak minded mayor. However, these lapes are few and don't detract from the plot. Quinn continues to be a great lawman, making terrible romantic decisions. Would have liked to have seen more of Callie and Ms. Jean in this story, maybe next time.

I have listened to two books set in Mississippi lately. The exaggerated accents can be annoying, although not as much in this one as the last. I just wish the performers would learn to pronounce the names of the the towns. Biloxi in the last one, Natchez in this one.
The story was good, but predictable. Obviously ties in some current events, including what happens to the girl, as well as politics.

I enjoyed it..but....
