Solid and insightful

With all he handwringing about what our civilization has supposedly lost, this offering offers a solid sense of hope and purpose. The stars that shone on Plato and Moses shine on us, largely unchanged. The foundations of the created order will stand through all human fashions.

A Timely Work When Hope Seems Lost

The only negative thing I can say about this book is that it's too short. Went I finished, I thought the app was broken. Granted, the book did have an ending, and it was well done, but I was left wanting more. This book to me was a battle cry of sorts.

A Unique Approach to a Devisive Topic

There are few things more difficult to talk about in our culture than gender roles, slavery, lordship, and a well-ordered house. CR Wiley takes a unique approach by comparing and contrasting the Roman culture/literature concerning piety and the household with the biblical story of piety and the household. Since the New Testament was written in a Roman context, looking into that context along with the origins of some key Greek words in Ephesians (not just in Ephesians 5 mind you) sheds light on the culture that Paul wrote to. In this regard, very little time at the conclusion of the book is spent on the household code of Ephesians 5. Instead the author takes you into a worldview that is foreign to modern America to help us see that we may have lost something between the writing of the New Testament and the present.

In this regard the book reminds me of John Macarthur's book "Slave" where he spent an extended period of time spelling out exactly what a poorly translated Greek word meant and what it would have brought to mind in a Roman culture.

The one complaint I have with the book is that the author presents an ideal where the Husband and Wife's primary source of income should be self-dependent. It's a minor point in the book and seems to be more a plug for his other book than a full-orbed discussion, which made it sound like an assertion that wasn't ready to deal with the reality it's being spoken into. Again though, it wasn't necessarily the topic being discussed so I can agree with the author that self-employment should be the ideal for households.

Excellent but wordy

The message the author shares is needful for us modern 21st century Christians. Its a short book and definitely worth listening to if you care at all about Christian homes and the important role they play. A, must read, really, for homemakers and husbands/ fathers as well.

A timely book!

This is a very good little book, and one that I’ll be warmly recommending to others. Its message was not new to me, but it’s an excellent and very succinct expression of some vitally important ideas.

One note about the reader’s performance: it baffles me that a professional reader couldn’t be bothered to learn how to properly pronounce Latin words and names. Latin pronunciation presents no great challenge to native English speakers, and there are abundant guides to both the classical and ecclesiastical standards available online for free. His Greek pronunciation is also very poor, but the Latin really stood out to me because it would have been so easy to get it right.

Wiley is faithful and profitable in this helpful work. I would recommend this book to all parents and especially to ministers of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
