Throughout Scripture, God makes covenants with his people. This is not just a contract, but a personal bond in which God takes responsibility for his people, and his people respond to him in faith. This is true of our relationship with God, and it is true in the case of lesser covenants, such as the covenant family.
In this short book, Douglas Wilson shows how the family should live in the light of what the Bible says about the covenant. The husband is the head of the household, and this means that the problems of the family members are not their problems but his problems. The husband cannot just dismiss his wife's problems as something she needs to work through by herself, and the parents cannot complain when his kids don't act like they were taught to. The family is bound together in covenant.
This book covers everything from marriage to childrearing to cultural engagement. The family is not just a collection of individuals: it is a unit joined together by God, and we should live as though that were true (because it is).

Our modern society has called for us to “smash the patriarchy”, and the church has not done much better. Instead of telling men how they can hone and refine their aggressive traits, the church has told men that they should aspire to be meek servant-leaders, and when a man shows any signs of independence, he is shown the door. Men are supposed to found households, join brotherhoods, and work toward a mission. God made men to be strong and aggressive risk-takers. This is a feature, not a bug. The modern dating system is bankrupt. It does not train young people to form a relationship but rather to form a series of relationships, hardening themselves to all but the current one. Recreational dating encourages emotional attachments without covenantal fences and makes a joke of a father's authority. The disrespect children have for their fathers in this area is an echo of the disrespect fathers have for their own office.

harmful to woman who are in relationship with abusive men.
while the men's chapters had smaller issue, the woman's chapters discredited amd glazed over the affects of abuse and never once addressed how a woman who IS married to an abusive man should handle anything. "a godly woman is sexually responsive" was just one quote that is riddled with issues, it seems Douglas does not comprehend how abuse affects a woman's sex drive, nor does he understand that woman have responsive sex drives, which means a woman's sex drive is dependent on the circumstances, which ends up meaning if her husband is not emotionally safe, her sex drive will be stifled by HIS behaviors. but according to Douglas, a Godly woman ignores all of that and bites the bullet and receives whatever sexual escapades her husband presents, despite anything, otherwise she is to be labeled as "ungodly". would NOT reccomend to any couples who might be experiencing any level of abuse.
