The story of the Highland clans of Scotland is famous, the names celebrated, and the deeds heroic. Having clung to ancient traditions of family, loyalty, and valor for centuries, the clans met the beginning of their end at the fateful Battle of Culloden in 1746.

Alistair Moffat traces the history of the clans from their Celtic origins to the coming of the Romans; from Somerled the Viking to Robert the Bruce; from the great battles of Bannockburn and Flodden to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Risings; and from the Clearances to the present day.

Moffat is an adept guide to the world of the clans, a world dominated by lineage, land, and community. These are stories of great leaders and famous battles, and of an extraordinary people, shaped by the unique traditions and landscape of the Scottish Highlands. It's a story too about the pain of leaving, with the great emigrations to the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand that began after Culloden.

I very much enjoyed this book. It’s presented not so much in the feel of a linear history, but instead with a focus on particular events and subjects, exploring the history and impact of such. While holding my attention, the details provided were deep and will require another (or more) listen.
The reader is engaging and pleasant to listen to.

It builds the sense of the deep history.

Beautiful narration.
Very informative insights to the Scottish clans. As I learn more about 18th century Scotland, the book will still have something to teach me.

I will listen again

This book was amazing!
So much history behind the clan names and points of reference to notable clansmen and women.
The only thing that would have made this book a full 5 stars would have been if the narrator, albeit excellent in Gaelic pronunciations, would have had more inflection in her voice. She was very monotone and this comes across as being disinterested in the topic. If you can get past that, you will enjoy this book.

Extremely Informative with Concise Clan Histories

Concise and interesting. Performer, however, reads too fast, as if she, herself were not interested in the text.

Run through history

Well comprised and having a Gaelic speaking narrator with a native Scottish accent made it much more concrete.

Easy to digest comprehensive history
