Acerca de esta escucha
Why does one smoker die of lung cancer but another live to 100? The answer is "The Hidden Half" - those random, unknowable variables that mess up our attempts to comprehend the world.
We humans are very clever creatures - but we're idiots about how clever we really are. In this entertaining and ingenious book, Blastland reveals how in our quest to make the world more understandable, we lose sight of how unexplainable it often is. The result - from GDP figures to medicine - is that experts know a lot less than they think.
Filled with compelling stories from economics, genetics, business, and science, The Hidden Half is a warning that an explanation which works in one arena may not work in another. Entertaining and provocative, it will change how you view the world.

Founded in London in 1717 as a way of binding men in fellowship, Freemasonry proved so addictive that within two decades it had spread across the globe. Masonic influence became pervasive. Under George Washington, the Craft became a creed for the new American nation. Masonic networks held the British empire together. Under Napoleon, the Craft became a tool of authoritarianism and then a cover for revolutionary conspiracy. Both the Mormon Church and the Sicilian mafia owe their origins to Freemasonry.

Drone pilots who carry out targeted assassinations. Undocumented immigrants who man the "kill floors" of industrial slaughterhouses. Guards who patrol the wards of America's most violent and abusive prisons. In Dirty Work, Eyal Press offers a paradigm-shifting view of the moral landscape of contemporary America through the stories of people who perform society's most ethically troubling jobs. As Press shows, we are increasingly shielded and distanced from an array of morally questionable activities that other, less privileged people perform in our name.

If there is one belief that has united the left and the right, psychologists and philosophers, ancient thinkers and modern ones, it is the tacit assumption that humans are bad. It's a notion that drives newspaper headlines and guides the laws that shape our lives. From Machiavelli to Hobbes, Freud to Pinker, the roots of this belief have sunk deep into Western thought. Human beings, we're taught, are by nature selfish and governed primarily by self-interest.

Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week's meals. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight.

Historia
As revelatory as Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, physician and award-winning author Louise Aronson’s Elderhood is an essential, empathetic look at a vital but often disparaged stage of life. For more than 5,000 years, 'old' has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. That means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Yet at the very moment that humans are living longer than ever before, we’ve made old age into a disease.

Dry subject
this was very reminiscent of Malcolm gladwell's book, but about half as interesting. I did finish it to the end and some parts of it were interesting but these parts in between were spaced too far apart for me.

The Role of Humility
If you've ever wondered if science has an answer to whether we are primarily a product of nature (our genes) of nurture (our environment), then this book is for you. If you are not prepared for the answer you will get, then this book MIGHT be for you. If you think you already know the answer, this book may well be eye opening.
This book is about complexity. It attempts to explain why it is that so many scientific findings are irreproducible. It attempts to acquainted the reader with the various confounding factors that make it difficult to truly know something.

I learned nothing.
Blastland somehow finds the idea that we do not know everything amazing. His fascination with the not obvious is the age old question of epistemology- how do we know anything? He is stumped.
He mocks that we did not or now do not know how something works, but rather celebrate the challenge and encourage the curiosity he tells us too often it is near pointless.
The potential downside here is the use of his examples by some to dismiss the idea of facts or authority.
