Named Book of the Month Club's Book of the Year, 2017

Selected one of New York Times Readers’ Favorite Books of 2017

Winner of the 2018 Goldsboro Books Glass Bell Award

From the beloved New York Times best-selling author of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a sweeping, heartfelt saga about the course of one man's life, beginning and ending in post-war Ireland.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least, that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he?

Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from - and over his many years, will struggle to discover an identity, a home, a country, and much more.

In this, Boyne's most transcendent work to date, we are shown the story of Ireland from the 1940s to today through the eyes of one ordinary man. The Heart's Invisible Furies is a novel to make you laugh and cry while reminding us all of the redemptive power of the human spirit.

I knew I was going to love this book right from the first sentence. In just a few words, you knew that this story would be serious yet funny, heartbreaking yet heartwarming. It’s a saga that deals with religion, family, sexuality, love, and belonging. Narrator Stephen Hogan is the only person who could take our Dubliner protagonist from age 7 through 70. It's a heavy and thought-provoking listen, and one that deserves rapt attention. —Laura, Audible Editor

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Boyne, who has a wonderful gift for characterization, does a splendid job of weaving these various lives together in ways that are richly dramatic, sometimes surprising, and always compelling...Often quite funny, the story nevertheless has its sadness, sometimes approaching tragedy. Utterly captivating and not to be missed." (Booklist)

"With quick strokes and bitter humor, Boyne's opening scene encapsulates the Irish church's hypocrisy...Boyne continues his crusading ways with the quiet keening of this painful, affecting novel." (Kirkus)

"Narrator Stephen Hogan's performance of the twists and turns of Cyril's struggle is dramatic, life affirming, and inspiring.... It's a coming-of-age tale delivered by Hogan in a sensitive narration. Listeners looking for both hearty laughs and gentle tears will enjoy Cyril's journey." (AudioFile)

A Tour De Force! This book was everything it is claimed to be and more. First, it is well
written, like Joyce (when not showing off) but with modern flair. The pacing, voice, and place, they are all incredible. Also first, it is an honest portrait of an Irish man and his friends and family and loves through the ages. I feel like I know what it is like to have come of age in Ireland, be I a girl or a boy, and regardless of who my heart falls for. I also have a deeper appreciation for more of what my homosexual friends have actually lived through, yet I do not feel beaten over the head with it. This is just a story. Such a story that it feels real to me, and I'm in book hang over. Oh, how the heart furiously betrays us, and yet how it is loyal and true.

Had I known what this was about, I would not have purchased. However, the reviews raved, so I plunged. I thoroughly enjoyed the narration, the story, the history and timeline it followed. Having lived in San Francisco during the height of the AIDS epidemic I appreciated the perspective of the protagonist from Ireland. Also having grown up in a predominantly catholic community which I was not a part of .... I could really relate to the crazy catholic credo.

Glad I didn't miss this one

It takes place in Ireland, Amsterdam, and NY, 3 of my favorite places in the world. The writing is outstanding, the narrator was incredible. Take a chance On this one you won’t regret it.

A real Irish history... I hate how so much of Irish history is so sad, however the strength of its people to go on will never stop amazing me. This was a sad but wonderfully told story with a happy ending that is not predictable. So worth reading

Great surprise

This is such a beautiful book and story. I don’t want to give anything away, so I won’t discuss the plot much. The narration is incredible- different voices and accents... the story is funny and completely tragic (but very fitting that these two go hand in hand.) This is the best audiobook I have listened to and I almost bought it in print so when I was in bed at night, I could keep reading for a bit longer. Through time in one man’s perspective, it beautifully tells the stories of human resilience, cruelty, justice, injustice, and compassion. This is one of my new favorite books.

This book .... I don’t have the proper words. The highs and lows, laughs and anger.... this book hangover will be a long one.
Do yourself a favor, worth the credit I promise!

Why did I wait?

Good naration, that helped keep me from just giving up on this story. The main character isn't that likeable, he never seems to make good choices and comes off whiney.
I was more interested in some of the other characters stories. I thought the book would be more about his mother by the sample.

Predictable

I wanted to hate the main character . I think I did . I know I had very little respect for him . He had no guile . He vacillated on every moral dilemma presented to him. He was very flawed . His biological , adoptive mother , adoptive father were incredible characters in their own right . He floundered through every aspect of his life , IMO. Don’t get me wrong , I love Boyne. I’ve read everything he’s written . I recommend this book . If however , you’re looking for a hero or redemption in a character , Cyril is not your man.
