The voice is disappointing.

It was difficult to enjoy the story because the voice was so boring. I listened to the whole story in hopes that I would get used to it, but I did not.

Looking for a haunted house story in the plus catalog I stumbled onto Marie Wilkens and The Haunting of Englewood Estate. The first few chapters weren’t great but neither were they horrible for self published work without editorial aid, so I kept listening. I can and have gotten behind indie authors without the means to hire multiple editors. However, midway through this book I strongly suspected that I was reading my first AI book. Looking the author up I found that they have published 113 books in this series, and another 213 books in two other series, all in the last 3 years. I can’t imagine how they could have accomplished this feat without significant assistance by AI. I fear that small time human authors will be buried under mass amounts of robotic work in no time. For the first time in 20 years I find myself reconsidering the purchase of self published books, knowing that I have found some of my favorites in that category.

The story itself was bland, the characters wooden, and the plot full of holes. Unworthy of the time I invested in it and ultimately happy I hadn’t purchased it outright.

The AI narration was as expected, lacking the flair that a professional voice actor delivers, but at the least wasn’t completely monotone.

Stupid, juvenile boring book

The reading of the book was AI and made it even worse. The author is no writer. A 10 year old could have done better and no one should waste a credit on it.

AI Narrator Ruined the Story

I listened to the entire story out of sheer stubbornness. It was impossible to focus on the writing and story because the AI narration was so laughable. I will read a book by the author again gladly, but will avoid all AI narration moving forward.
