Resumen del Editor

Dig deep into the unsolved murder of Jackie English and join the hunt for a serial killer

Fifty years ago, a serial killer prowled the quiet city of London, Ontario, marking it as his hunting grounds. As young women and boys were abducted, raped, and murdered, residents of the area held their loved ones closer and closer, terrified of the monster - or monsters - stalking the streets. Homicide detective Dennis Alsop began hunting the killer in the 1960s, and he didn’t stop searching until his death 40 years later. For decades, detectives, actual and armchair, and the victims’ families and friends continued to ask questions: Who was the Forest City Killer? Was there more than one person, or did a depraved individual commit all of these crimes on his own?

Combing through the files Detective Alsop left behind, researcher Vanessa Brown reopens the cases, revealing previously unpublished witness statements, details of evidence, and astonishing revelations. And through her investigation, Vanessa posits the unthinkable: is it possible that the Forest City Killer is still alive and, like the notorious Golden State Killer, a simple DNA test could bring him to justice?

Loved the book but not narration

Research top notch, story amazing but narrator could be better. It was a hard listen if I’m being honest. I went and bought the book to read instead

Content and research top notch

Unfortunately the narration was flat and robotic with odd pronunciations. Reminiscent of a female computer voice in text to speech programs. It was quite distracting!

Terrible narration.

Couldn't get past the first chapter due to very stiff narration. Can't comment on the book itself.

did anyone listen to this reader before hiring?!

You couldn't find someone who grew up in Ontario? All the place names are pronounced wrong! This was painful to listen to, but I wanted to know what happened so I stuck it out. I'll avoid this reader from now on.

thorough coverage of case

I liked it and also it was impactful to hear about the surviving families of the murder victims and how it affected them. the author laid out the theories very well and it was an engrossing read that was narrated well. For the most part, it seemed respectful to the victims, the exception being the occasional gruesome description of a victim's body. only one of them stood out as being graphic in a way that felt disrespectful as it focused a lot on the intimate details of her body. I do think there's a way to write about true crime without bring overly invasive of victims' violated bodies, and that one missed the mark. For some reason one stood out as being that way and the rest were fine. Wonder if the author just had more details on that case or something

apart from that, great read, very thorough and helpful to understand the case

All Wrong

As far as religion goes the facts are all wrong.
Might want to do some research first. To be honest the writer really has no idea what she’s talking about. Very ignorant. This book was extremely frustrating.

Promises a lot, delivers little

Caveat emptor: Read the summary closely, and realize it never commits to a resolution, or anything like it. What you get is a lot of intrusion on family grief and speculation on a variety of weird men who circulated around the area. Then there is the odd admiration for a detective who, as far as can be seen, didn't really accomplish anything, other than accept a confession of a suspect in one case, who'd broken down on his own. Essentially, the mention of the Golden State Killer in the summary is less a reference to the similarity of the crimes, and more an acknowledgement that the story is unfinished. The narration is fine as it goes, but it seems the narrator is only Canadian on very specific words, and even then, oddly so.
