Resumen del Editor

Combining the social commentary of The Handmaid’s Tale with the white-knuckled thrills of Red Rising, this epic space opera filled with “lush prose” (Publishers Weekly) follows a comfort woman as she claims her agency, a soldier questioning his allegiances, and a non-binary hero out to save the solar system.

First Sister has no name and no voice. As a priestess of the Sisterhood, she travels the stars alongside the soldiers of Earth and Mars - the same ones who own the rights to her body and soul. When her former captain abandons her, First Sister’s hopes for freedom are dashed when she is forced to stay on her ship with no friends, no power, and a new captain - Saito Ren - whom she knows nothing about. She is commanded to spy on Captain Ren by the Sisterhood, but soon discovers that working for the war effort is much harder when you’re falling in love.

Lito val Lucius climbed his way out of the slums to become an elite soldier of Venus but was defeated in combat by none other than Saito Ren, resulting in the disappearance of his partner, Hiro. When Lito learns that Hiro is both alive and a traitor to the cause, he now has a shot at redemption: track down and kill his former partner. But when he discovers recordings that Hiro secretly made, Lito’s own allegiances are put to the test. Ultimately, he must decide between following orders and following his heart.

With “a layered, action-filled plot and diverse characters” (Library Journal), The First Sister explores the power of technology, colonization, race, and gender and is perfect for fans of James S.A. Corey, Chuck Wendig, and Jay Posey.

Wonderful characters, small story

Bottom line: if you like character studies in an effortlessly articulated setting with a focused, maybe even minimalistic story, you'll really dig this. Almost nothing happens in the plot for the first 50% of the book, and that's just great. You seep in the characters and universe for a while, and then a very brief series of events happens towards the end. The titular character affects basically nothing in the plot, but is a perfect vehicle for the author to ruminate on morality and the politics of the war. Overall a fun, smart, and character-focused experience!

Unexpectedly Wonderful

I stumbled across The First Sister at a time when I was somewhat over-saturated in the genre. I expected something fairly typical. Instead, I found that It was a hidden gem. The world that the story is set in is fresh and intriguing. It’s not too often that plot twists surprise me, but First Sister managed it. The narrators did a great job bringing the characters to life. I liked it so much that I ended up buying a copy of the book to read, as well. I’m eagerly anticipating the next instalment.

So boring

Good narration but awful narrative. Don’t bother with this one. It’s a total waste of time.

Great story!

It has been a long time since I have enjoyed something from the sci-fi genre. I loved the characters and the world building. My only complaint, as someone who is Japanese, is that there is some stereotyping that grated at me a bit. However other aspects of the characters that were not stereotypical outshined the stereotypical bits. Plus I have read books with much worse stereotyping.

The First Sister is definitely woth the read or listen and I can't wait for the second book.

Adult Scythe

it was amazing and reminded me fondly of Scythe and the Toll. I can't wait for more. Amazing readers per character and great development of characters and world. A plot twist I never saw coming. 10/10

SO GOOD!

Complex, layered, surprising, and well-performed. I'll definitely look for the next book in the series. I loved it!

And Epic to Remember

This book really is something. I feel like no matter what you present as, one would find this book interesting and engaging. The characters are vivid and layered and only grow more so the further you progress into the story. And the narration is amazing, great voice actors that really carry the story and make it easy to distinguish all the characters. It can be hard to follow at times because it is jumping from narrator to narrator and going in and out of those narrators stories especially when all the narrators come together in the end. But it is broken up into plays before each switch, which really ties things together in a nice way while also giving you more background into this interesting future of corruption and strife among the stars. I'm very interested to see where she takes this next book and how the trilogy will end!

Slow start, but totally great!

The world building was great! Fascinating society, interesting tech. It takes a while to get into the characters, but once the plot progresses, things really take off. Lots of great plot twists kept me surprised the whole second half of the book. My only quibble is that I would’ve expected Hiro to be MUCH more upset about what was done to them (no details to avoid spoilers). Their general acceptance of it just didn’t ring true to me. But otherwise, it was an excellent book!
