Andy Serkis keeps the tradition of oral literature alive.

Andy Serkis is not simply a narrator; do not look here for a bed time story. Rob Inglis and his more traditional narration would serve you better if you would like to listen while you drift off. Serkis makes it entirely impossible—it is hard to fall asleep when you are so immersed in his storytelling. He has a unique voice that brings each character alive. He pays homage to the familiar voices that many of us associate with the cast of LOTR, but also uniquely marks each with his own tonal signature. This is quite literally the best narration of Tolkien’s work. Listening to Inglis is to be greeted with a familiar and beloved story. Listening to Serkis is to fall directly into Middle Earth.

The best reading of LOTR

Andy Serkis set the bar when he read The Hobbit during the Pandemic last year and I hoped they'd have a recorded version. It was incredible, I did not expect him to record The Lord of the Rings as well. He sets the bar higher here, this should go down as the definitive audio version of these books.

Best Storyteller Ever

For anyone who has yet to experience Tolkein, he weaves the very best adventure story in history. Even those who admit to not liking fantasy will be enchanted by Middle Earth. From The Hobbit, and all through the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you are completely roped into the world of hobbits, elves, wizards, and dwarves. It's the quintessential good and evil saga which will have you yearning to read it again and again. I am delighted to finally hear it narrated with perfection on Audible.

This is exactly how a reading of Lord of the Rings should be. Andy’s voices with each character is executed perfectly. I’ve listened to the other narrators of this book and while they were good, I’ll never go back after this.

Fresh, Exciting, and All New Experience

I have read (listened) to the Lord of the Rings on an annual basis for nearly 12 years now, and Andy Serkis’ narration brought such a fresh take to the tale that it brought on the same wonder and astonishment that I first experienced in the cinema or when my grandmother would read the hobbit to me as a child. I am still a fan of Robert Inglis’ narration, and encourage you to try Serkis if you are still on the fence. It is okay to enjoy them both for they are two wildly different, yet equally faithful and powerful narrations.
