Acerca de esta escucha

Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.

Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

As an American who has only learned Israel’s version of the history of the formation of Israel, this book really opened my eyes. The fact that my tax dollars continue to fund this genocide is unacceptable.

All Americans should read this

Normally I just give five star reviews to any book I like as a thank you to the author, but this is different. This book was equal parts gripping and harrowing. There was so much about the Nakbe and the suffering of the Palestinians that I didn’t know, and at times I had to force myself to continue listening because what I was hearing was so terrible. Thank you so much to Ilan Pappe and the rest of the New Israeli Historians for all of your work. It has truly changes my outlook on life.

Truly fantastic. Gripping and heart-wrenching

A very important and necessary read that tells the true history of how Israel came to be, and the horrific displacement, colonization, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians committed by the Zionist Israeli government.

A must read

The book was informative. The author is clear in his goal of his telling of a terrible tragedy. This is a critical look at the Zionist role in The Palestine tragedy. There are 2 sides to the story of course. No question what side he was on. Yet he seemed to support his thoughts. At times it felt like a list of villages that were attacked and destroyed. During these moments in the book I was less attentive to the story, often tempted to fast forward. I think this took away from the message.

At times overly detailed telling of a tragedy

This book, by a Jewish Israeli, documents the narrative that is rarely heard in the propaganda-flooded mainstream conversation about the history of Israel and Palestine. It provides an important historical analysis of what happened to the Palestinians during the Nakba, "the great catastrophe": the 1948 establishment of Israel. The book is best read in hardcopy or e-book format, because this audiobook version unfortunately suffers from an extremely poor voice performance. The narrator would have been suitable for a documentary film, but here, his performance is pedantic, overacted, and out of proportion to the material's format. His Sephardic Hebrew and Arabic pronunciations are exaggerated, artificial, and sometimes incorrect.

Important history, very poor voice performance
