Resumen del Editor

Following his #1 New York Times best seller Our Endangered Values, the former president, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, offers an assessment of what must be done to bring permanent peace to Israel, with dignity and justice for Palestine.

President Carter, who was able to negotiate peace between Israel and Egypt, has remained deeply involved in Middle East affairs since leaving the White House. He has stayed in touch with the major players from all sides in the conflict and has made numerous trips to the Holy Land, most recently as an observer of the Palestinian elections in 2005 and 2006.

In this book, President Carter shares his intimate knowledge of the history of the Middle East and his personal experiences with the principal actors, and he addresses sensitive political issues many American officials avoid. Pulling no punches, Carter prescribes steps that must be taken for the two states to share the Holy Land without a system of apartheid or the constant fear of terrorism.

The general parameters of a long-term, two-state agreement are well known, the president writes. There will be no substantive and permanent peace for any peoples in this troubled region as long as Israel is violating key U.N. resolutions, official American policy, and the international "road map" for peace by occupying Arab lands and oppressing the Palestinians.

Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid is a challenging, provocative, and courageous work.

The Despised Middle

This is an excellent book even if the former President and Nobel Prize Winner does not emphasize Palestinian intractability--which certainly exists. Americans need to know about Jewis intractability as well, for it just as surely exists. And for attempting to redress the balance, he is accused of anti-Semitism and worse. His willingness to put his repuation on the line by a much needed redressing is a badge of his great humanity, if not of his political accumen. Then again, it may well be that his political accumen is of a much longer reach than the rest of us mortals.

Very informative

Really liked the book. Would have enjoyed it more with a different narrator. Had trouble understanding his words. But, he should be sainted for his efforts.

Great Book

I was very familiar with the general goings-on in the region, this book goes into lots more detail, and doesn't paint the Israelis in a very good light.

A must listen

This is the part of history that is not broadcast or taught in schools. President Carter’s humanity comes through in his memoirs of the conflict.

Current again

I read this many years ago and liked the idea of Jimmy Carter narrating it. I enjoyed listening to his story. I love hearing his personal insight with human stories. He has clearly commited his life’s work to this cause and his passion is so clear. His personal first hand knowledge fir decades paired with his warm prayfil perspective gave me more knowledge and hope.

Just what I was looking for: a primary source

There are so many opinion pieces regarding the state of Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians. But I am looking for first person accounts that can help me make up my mind. President Carter describes what he saw and how he felt during his direct encounters and conversations with key players during 1976-2006. He tries hard to be as fair as he can be. He helps the reader make a time line of the battles and the peace initiatives. He recounts the conversations he had with Palestinians trying to vote during the elections the Carter Center monitored. His conclusion lands with a great deal of weight.

Sometimes authors aren’t much good reading their own books. I wasn’t put off at all by President Carter’s reading; it sounded like a serious speaker reading from notes he was very familiar with. I know that probably sounds like a criticism, but I don’t mean it to be.

Glad I picked this book.

Palestine

Terrific insight and analysis by President Carter. More than any other person alive, Carter understands the history and inside story of the conflict. Hopefully, our leaders are reading or listening to him.

Honest & Sincere

The most honest book about the Middle East in the last 10 years.
Courageous.
The Israel lobby / AIPAC will go nuts because someone has spoken the "truth" about the systematic, cruel & immoral oppression of Palestinians.
Openly discusses the disproportionate response to the desperation of suicide bombing.
Like America, Israel is armed with WMDs of every kind; nuclear, biological & chemical and yet claims fear of neighbors who only have resort to rhetoric and bluster.
