Resumen del Editor

An instant hit in the UK, this is the true account of a German shepherd who was adopted by the Royal Air Force during World War II, joined in flight missions, and survived everything from crash-landings to parachute bailouts - ultimately saving the life of his owner and dearest friend. In the winter of 1939 in the cold snow of no-man's-land, two loners met and began an extraordinary journey that would turn them into lifelong friends. One was an orphaned puppy, abandoned by his owners as they fled Nazi forces. The other was a different kind of lost soul - a Czech airman bound for the Royal Air Force and the country that he would come to call home.

Airman Robert Bozdech stumbled across the tiny German shepherd - whom he named Ant - after being shot down on a daring mission over enemy lines. Unable to desert his charge, Robert hid Ant inside his jacket as he escaped. In the months that followed, the pair would save each other's lives countless times as they flew together with Bomber Command. And though Ant was eventually grounded due to injury, he refused to abandon his duty, waiting patiently beside the runway for his master's return from every sortie, and refusing food and sleep until they were reunited. By the end of the war Robert and Ant had become British war heroes, and Ant was justly awarded the Dickin Medal, the "Animal VC".

A dog knows what he thinks he should do

Any additional comments?

This is a well told and well performed true story of a great dog in unusual circumstances. Dogs get into their minds what they should do. When it is following their chosen master's desires it can be amazing. Finding people buried by a bomb mission is phenomenal, but Antis got into a lot of interesting situations. And as any dog owner knows, they sometimes do things that you wish they wouldn't do, where do they get these ideas? This is not just for dog lovers, but rather is indeed an amazing story in a time of turmoil. Well done!

I don't like war stories but loved this story

THIS story is moving for anyone with a heart for four legged friends. THE story filled with situations that these two life long friends share is beyond coincidence. Loyalty is shown that touches the hardest of hearts. Antes was a true hero.

heartwarming story of man and dog

This was a great story of man and dog work unconditional love and devotion. At times the anthropomorphization of the dog became unrealistic with giving the dog credit for understanding human emotion and intention.

Interesting part of history brought to life

My Spouse and I listened to this story together because of our interest in all three subjects...a man and his dog flying planes during WWII. Brought back memories of crowding around the radio with the family.

Darn

I am a total sap for an animal book… Particularly one that extols the virtues of God's greatest gift to unworthy man: the dog. In addition, as a combat veteran,I have seen firsthand the sacrifices of noble canines. This is a wonderful tale, but the tear factor was totally absent. The empathy and the suffering somehow did not adequately translate.

Very good book with lots of heart

Faced with hatred against the Germans for taking his homeland of Czechoslovakia, Robert and his Czechoslovakian brother airmen take the fight to the Germans after escaping to Great Britain. Along the way, he befriends a German Shepherd puppy who saves their lives numerous times during their escape from France through to the end of the war and beyond. This is a true love story between a man facing the fear and horror of war and a brave loyal companion who makes it all bearable. I highly recommend this book to all readers who need a story of trustworthiness in this age where love is so easily betrayed.
