The Constable

The was my first Audiobook, I really enjoyed it. If you are a fan of the of the Renegade Star series this is a really good prequel to learn how Alphonse Malloy ticks. I really enjoyed Charlie Thurston’s reading, he is very talented, he cashed his voice for each character and kept them consistently good.

Not bad, not great

I wish the Narrator had taken the time to listen to the rest of the Renegade books and had tried harder to incorporate some of that performance (and pronunciations) to the series. It would have made it flow better.

I also don't like how "iamverysmart" Alfonse is in this, I know he has a lot of work to grow but damn, if you knew this guy in real life with that kind of tactless "i know more than you" attitude you'd probably want nothing to do with him. Glad he grew out of it though. I got this book cause I finished all the existing Renegade books and wanted more from that universe, but honestly I could take it or leave it. But it was fun to revisit some older characters.

A fluff piece

A decent story. Not sure it it’s worth the credit. If you’ve gone through everything else you can listen to and liked the Renegade Star series then you won’t go wrong with this story.

Fun read

This was a good, pulp-like space opera which reminded me of the fun that I had reading E.E. Doc Smith or early Heinlein. We'll paved. Good fun.

An ok book for younger readers

A little shallow. Probably for an audience younger than me. Would be fine as a teaching device for middle school

Can’t put it down

This is an amazing book. I hadn’t really gotten that invested into Alfonse while listening to Renegade Star but after this series I have a whole new appreciation for him. I couldn’t put it down.

An awesome look into the backstory of one of the more intriguing supporting characters from the Renegade Star series of books. I was pleasantly surprised with the route taken with the first book! The pack finishes the second book with a satisfying conclusion to lead you into the main series. ... even if I want more details to bridge the gap. 🤣

Fantastic pre-story

Another great story in the Chaney / Renegade universe. I enjoyed getting to know Alphonse’s back story. The narrator was excellent. Highly recommend the story and the entire Renegade Series.

Keeps you hooked

Loved it i love anything JN Chaney writes. it is always amazing. fun fun

Only done with book 1

So far, the image on the front of the book and the image the voice and writing create in my head do not match. I see Alphonse as a tall, lanky nerd...right down to the pocket protector. Both through descriptions and the heavy nasal quality of the VO. I also see him as having Aspergers's or something similar due to his apparent inability to understand social cues or to understand what is and isn't acceptable in certain situations. A line from the beginning of the second book really reinforces this for me in the line, "I waved, a gesture that always seemd supurfluous before, but that I now understood was a sign of friendliness." He is also a savant when it comes to observation and seems to have an eidetic memory, further reinforcing my feeling that Alphonse is, indeed, on the spectrum. It is never said, but it comes across quite clearly to me.
Alphonse is certainly not stupid or slow, he is a great character and makes the story a lot of fun in which to listen. I am thoroughly enjoyong listening to this book set. I can't wait to see what Alphonse gets into with the Constables.
