Resumen del Editor

This audiobook is a comprehensive guide in understanding how to deal with a person on the autism spectrum within the medical system, formulating effective communication strategies, and developing best care practices. It covers sensory issues, pain tolerance, body awareness, communication challenges, legal and ethical issues, HIPPA compliance, Americans with Disabilities Act, and much more.

It's important for healthcare professionals to realize that communication starts at the admissions desk, and follows through to the patient's discharge. Whether the patient is simply going for a routine doctor's appointment, or getting admitted for major surgery, the autism patient needs specialized care for optimal results. This audiobook is geared for use in healthcare curriculum courses, as well as use as a guidebook for all healthcare and allied healthcare providers.

I learned a lot from this book. However,

I learned a lot from this book. However, there were a couple things in the book that struck me as a bit strange. One was very good description of how autism is a spectrum, but then the the book to me did not do a good job of describing how to deal with different people across the spectrum in the medical setting. Another issue I had with the book is multiple references to Autism Speaks. For those who do not know, this is a organization that is hated by many people in the autistic community for how they treat autistic people. Last, but not least, I kept waiting for her to talk about autism joy. However, she talks about how are struggle for the parents and that’s true for some, but there’s a lot of joy in the autistic community.

I say this knowing that this book was written 2017 and information about the autistic community is constantly evolving as research appears. Additionally, I don’t know what was like in it 2017, but now there is a large and vibrant autistic community on social media. That is very easy to find. I suggest reading this book for the information about autism in it, but also look for other sources to get a more rounder view of the autistic experience and tips and tricks from autistic people about dealing with the medical industry.

This Book May Have Saved My Life

The medical profession knows very little about the specific issues associated with the treatment of autistic patients. Yes, we are all different, and not every chapter dealt with an issue that applied directly to me. But the chapter on anesthesia alone could easily save any autistic life at some point. I buy the paperback version of the book and give it to every doctor that treats me as a gift. Much of this information is not readily available, not all in one place. If you are autistic get this book.
