An unknown American tourist, who will one day achieve greatness, visits Carlisle to research his family history. His arrival coincides with Inspector Armstrong’s investigating of a macabre series of grave-robbing incidents in the city. The detective’s enquiries inadvertently lead him into investigating a case that had lain dormant for over seventy years.

The second case is set against the backdrop of the Great War. With the building of the enormous munitions factory at Gretna, Cornelius is faced with the impossible task of controlling thousands of navvies who built and work at the factory, intent on coming into Carlisle on a nightly basis to drink away their disposable income. Labour unrest, Irish sectarianism, women’s suffrage, and the Government’s State Management Scheme are all issues, that when combined, prove every bit as explosive as The Devil’s Porridge.

Very good story

I enjoyed the stories in Casebook of Inspector Armstrong and how the author wove fiction with real historical figures. The narration was excellent.

good mystery series

Martin Daley has got mystery's down pat. Each volume actually contains two stories but they never feel rushed or unfinished. I'm not usually a fan of small books but these have won me over. Each story is well done with plenty of back story for characters.

The first case in the series deals with Armstrong as a younger man. He crosses paths with a famous American during his case which makes for an interesting aside. Armstrong ends up investigating a cold case that is really engrossing.

The second deals with the workforce during WW1 and a munitions factory. His case is made more difficult by dealing with an influx of new immigrants who have money to spend in not so legal ways.

Steve White is an excellent narrator with a talent for different voices and accents. After listening to several of these volumes, he IS the voice of Cornelius Armstrong and I hope he continues to narrate the Armstrong mysteries.
