The Book of Jubilees was written in Hebrew by a Pharisee between 135 and 105 BC. The author interprets the history of events from the creation to the giving of the law on Sinai according to the Pharisaic standpoint of his time. His purpose was the defense of Judaism against the attacks of the Hellenistic spirit that had been in the ascendant one generation earlier and was still powerful, and to prove that the law was of everlasting validity.

It has been known in the West only since the 1840s, when European travellers acquired manuscripts from monasteries in Ethiopia. The Book of Jubilees, sometimes called 'Little Genesis', is an ancient Jewish book that retells many of the stories in Genesis and Exodus with some additional details. It has been known in the West only since the 1840s, when European travellers acquired manuscripts from monasteries in Ethiopia. Then, in 1949, a complete Hebrew manuscript was found amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is considered canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and one of the pseudepigrapha by Protestant, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Between 1947 and 1956, approximately 15 copies of the "Book of Jubilees" were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. This is second only to a number of Psalms, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Exodus, and Genesis, and far greater than any other extra-biblical text found there, including "The Book of Enoch."

The official editions of the King James contained the books of the Apocrypha until 1796. Most printers did not clear inventories and change to the 66-book version we know today until the mid 1800's. The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.
