Years after conspiring men denied his father the inheritance that was his by birthright, Mr. Henry Bennet returns to Longbourn with his three daughters, having received the estate on the death of its previous master. Mr. Bennet has no notion why the man who stole it from his father willed the property to his control, but he is grateful to return to the lands of his forebears.

As the Bennets settle into their lives as gentlefolk once again, their new friends welcome them to the neighborhood, and they begin the struggle to turn Longbourn again into a prosperous estate. In this, Mr. Bennet finds assistance from his friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, a scion of the family who proved his father's salvation. Mr. Darcy, eager to help his dear friend learn how to become master of the estate, takes an immediate liking to the man's second daughter, Elizabeth, who works her way into his heart with little effort.

Unexpected to them all, their new position opens vistas wide to them, for the prospect of love and devotion, a future filled with promise, is open to them, from the eldest to the youngest. Of even greater importance, the Bennets will learn something of themselves and discover something of the betrayals that led to their family's hiatus from the estate.

As a fan of P&P JAFF, I enjoy a book with a new plot line and not simply a “retelling”. This variation has fresh takes on our favorite characters.

Elizabeth and Darcy both have strong personalities, they share instant attraction, and their dialogue is often of friendly, even sarcastic banter. As I said, these new personalities seem fresh especially when compared to the hundreds of “copy and paste” Lizzie and Darcies.

The narration is fabulous, as always. I love how Mr. Frost makes the characters come alive. I have actually searched Frost for other JAFFs because I know they will be fabulous.

A new plot line in this JAFF

All the changes were believable and worked perfectly into the plot. Mr Bennet, a friend of Darcy and his father, with three daughters, and no flighty wife or red coat chasing younger daughters. He inherits Longbourn after a distant cousin dies, an estate his father should have inherited long ago. An estate sadly neglected.

Bingley arrives to lease Netherfield at the suggestion of Darcy who has planned to visit his friend in Hartfordshire and hears about the estate. Bingley comes with two unmarried sisters. Louisa rejected Mr Hurst for being a slovenly drug who would’ve been a terrible estate owner. There’s a few unexpected couples who get together. And lastly a very different Collins.

There’s a couple of new antagonists in addition to the usual Dragon and Snake in the Grass.

The romances are sweet, not much heat. But the plot is original and the story so good I didn’t miss the romance not being more intense.

The story will be the reason I will listen again. Highly recommended.

Inventive off canon, in the best way.

Mr Bennet’s ancestors lost their estate due to greedy relatives and then one returned it upon his death. In the meantime Mr Bennet had been a rector and was content in his life with his three girls. Darcy’s grandfather was one who helped Mr Bennet’s father after the loss of the estate thus Mr Bennet and Darcy were friends. This friendship helped pave the way for additional friends and later marriages. I liked seeing Caroline and Louisa along with a younger Mr Collins (cousin to the ones who stole the estate) in this variation. Overall this is a low angst story. I got the audiobook to go with the ebook and Harry Frost’s narration is 5 stars!

A stolen estate returned

The story line is interesting and does not depend on evil actions taken by Lady Catherine, Caroline or Wickham to andvance the narrative. Although all three want to interfere and two manage some mischief, everything is quickly resolved. I have to admit that after having read hundreds of these variations, I kept expecting something bad to happen. I have tried to read the book but found it flat. However, Mr Frost brings the story to life and I very much enjoyed it. This is a family saga and it is best to approach it without the expectations of events that occur ad nauseam in most variations.

Very well performed narration by Harry Frost added interest to this book, which starts out with a completely different premise of the ownership of Longbourn. No entail, no hedgerows to upset anyone. No Mrs. Bennet, Kitty, or Lydia (yay!). But, instead we have skullduggery and avarice from distant relations, who take advantage of Mr. Bennet’s aged grandfather’s illness and steal the estate. Interesting plot change, and lovely new relationships. Could have been much shorter, but still a good listen.
