In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.

Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.

This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.

Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

I was never a big fan of the movie but I have to admit, this book scared the hell out of me. Very intense and spooky. In addition, the narrator keeps the listener on the edge of their seat with every word. If looking for a horror book, look no further! Great stuff….

So good, it’s scary.

I stumbled across this audible a few days ago and had to download it. I had read the book many times years ago. I am not here to convince you that it happened or to disprove the events. That is for each individual to decide. We all have our own beliefs. It is a well written book and the narrative is very good. I am glad I was able to revisit it.

A revisiting of a book I read many times.

It’s not terrible, entertaining for sure. Certainly does not make it seem as real as anyone claims.

Well it’s certainly something

I am reading horror books for October. After reading many horror fiction books, I needed a little break and decided to try this nonfiction book. It isn’t scary but it is creepy…creepy enough that I had to turn it off when I was listening one night while home alone because I was starting to freak myself out.

I am familiar with this story from the many true crime podcasts I have listened to. I think the story of events is exaggerated by the family, but I tried to suspend my disbelief temporarily to enjoy the story but there were details that made that pretty much impossible.

Overall, I recommend because it was free. Personally, I wouldn’t spend a credit on it.

Creepy Real Life Horror Story

I listened in the car and was enthralled and never bored. I’ve seen the movie before but now I want to see what was left out, because I believe there’s a lot!

Fascinating and thrilling

Mr. Porter knocks another one out of the park! We’ve all watched the film and/or read the book, but Ray Porter delivers the audiobook as it should be delivered. 🏆

The Amityville Horror is a hard book to rate. It is a book that author Jay Anson deems "a true story". It is a story that the Lutz's claimed to be a true account of what they experienced for 28 days at 112 Ocean Drive in Amityville, New York. In a later interview, George Lutz would say that his story was "mostly true", but he admitted that the novel embellished some things, like the green slime running down the walls. One of George's ex-stepsons, Chris, maintains that the haunting was real, but he also acknowledges that he was young, so his memory might not be reliable. George's oldest ex-stepson, Daniel, maintains that there were some supernatural goings on at 112 Ocean Drive but not to the degree that the novel depicted. He paints a darker and probably truer story of what really happened in the Lutz home: an abusive father figure in need of money, who fabricated much of the events at 112 Ocean Drive for a quick buck.

What's funny is that buried within in all the "supernatural goings on" at 112 Ocean Drive, we see the truth about the Lutz parents. They are quick to anger, quick to accuse, and they can be cruel in their punishments. George was also in need of money, so when the opportunity arose to profit from events that were apparently "too painful to talk about' he and Kathy managed to cough up 45 hours' worth of recordings on their story (including corrections). So much for being "too painful to talk about." LOL!

Despite all of this, I would be lying if I said that I was ever bored by The Amityville Horror. It is a propulsive read, despite way too much mundane information about daily tasks and who is sitting where, etc. If read as novel, The Amityville Horror is a good time. I just feel sorry for the Lutz children and the dog, Harry.

It (mostly) works as a piece of fiction
