Vampires have always lived in Eastern Europe. But with the fall of the Soviet Union, they began to spread across the continent, then the world, turning whole populations into vampires - or human cattle. Having overrun India, the far East, and the great cities of North and South America, the forces of Night are now spreading into the countryside to consolidate their conquest.

In a town on the New Jersey shore, the vampires have just arrived, along with their human henchmen, the cowboys, who round up human cattle for the overlords in return for the promise of eternal life - later. For the vampires wish only a few of their own kind to rule, and feed. The rest of humanity are to be helpless herds, the source of the blood of life.

Falsely accused of abuse, Father Joe is drunk in a basement waiting for the end. His superior has betrayed the local Catholic congregation and become a vampire. Sister Carolyn has become a formidable killer of cowboys and vampires. Joe's niece, escaped from the conquest of New York, has made her way south to find him. Brought together by Rabbi Zev Wolpin, who is shaken by the vampires’ fear of the cross and holy water, they plan their resistance. Against all odds, they discover that there just might be a way for humanity to really fight back. But first they will have to kill the vampire king of New York.

I just wish there was more

Midnight mass is an incredible book. While starting a little slow, the story quickly builds into a plot full of characters to love, the story and plot points are incredible, and the narrator was a perfect choice. I just wish there was a bit more at the end.
Read it, it’s awesome.

interesting story, but ...

like so many American stories, movies, tales.... there are twists upon twists. makes the characters seem indecisive and downright dumb. especially the women. why is it so hard to write a heroine that is strong, but human, and not a complete idiot?

I want more

Please F. Paul Wilson, write a sequel. This was so well done I want to experience the end.

Wow had me scared

This book is very explicit fair warning. Its also scary and exciting. Not very happy with dome of the ending but overall a scary exciting book.

Great Story

This book was great! fast paced and solid story telling being told right here!

One, ah ah ah!

The narrator wasn't awful, but it was hard to power through Franco's dialogue, because the Sesame Street Count accent was a little bit much. Otherwise, great performance and great book.

Good Vampire Read

This a very good vampire book. It’s puts a whole new twist on the vampire myth with a excellent side of end of the world apocalypse category.

Back to Basics Vampire Fiction From a Great Writer

I read this when it was first published and there wasn't as much post-apocalyptic fiction lying around. Of course, F. Paul Wilson is brilliant in his character development - read any Repairman Jack novel, but start with "The Tomb" if you want to read in order.

Midnight Mass is a classic vampire novel in a post-apocalyptic world. The vampires decide it's time to take over the world. Their human collaborators for daylight hours are deemed vichy (another nod to WW2 vichy French). In the end, it's up to half-undead Father Joe, his lesbian niece and Sister Carol who is a little like Carol from The Walking Dead.

It's fun and Jamie Renell does a great job with portraying the characters with excellent NY accents. His blaring "Faddah Joe, Faddah Joe..." made my walks something I looked forward to. The attention to detail shown with making of plastique explosive and nepalm are a great touch along with the beartrap booby trap. Same attention as given to Repairman Jack in his "fix it" cases. Really good stuff.

Really lazy story telling and cheesy dialogue. Had some potential but failed to deliver. Womp womp.
