He's waited half a century to choose an omega.

Lord Ronson Cadogan can stall no longer. He needs an omega, and he needs an heir.

Settled on the obvious perfect choice, and determined to see his fate through, Ronson can't afford to wait for the next ceremony to claim what he is owed. If only he was more excited about the match.

They call her the mouse.

Mairwen Posy knows precisely who the Alpha of Bleake Isle will choose, and it certainly isn't her. In fact, it's so predictable it's almost boring.

Resigned to her fate of disappearing into the background, Mairwen takes the role of observer, distracting the ache of being left out with the entertainment of dragonkin society's unfolding stories.

All is as expected, until the sudden twist in a familiar plot sends Mairwen in the least likely direction, right into the arms of the alpha.

The Alpha of Bleake Isle is book one in a new dragon shifter fantasy romance series, inspired by the historical and omegaverse genres. Each book in the series will focus on a different couple, and will include their in-book HEA.

I think I would have liked this book much better had I read it instead of listened to it. The difference between the two narrators just really kinda ruined the experience for me. Story wise, it was okay; Not terrible and not excellent either. Will I read the others in the series when they come out? Probably. Will I read this again? No.

Better off reading this one

*~* 2026 Audiobook Addition *~*
I wanted to listen to this world after reading this over a year ago, especially with book 2 releasing and I am so glad I did! It helped remind me of things that would be important for book 2 with the next alpha and his hard-fought HEA.

I enjoyed these two, sometimes they did grate on me but not enough for me to downgrade this to a 4 stars. Story was a 5 stars and audio was a 4 so it evens out to a 4.5 (so kept the 5 star rating this time). I thought these two were good picks to make it sound almost regency/historical but also fantasy and paranormal. Some of the performances again weren't my fav but some of them were! I loved how some of the side characters were done (like the rascal almost pirate Alpha hahaha). I thought the Alpha's sister was not my favorite performance and sometimes his second in command (half brother) was good but then sometimes the other narrator performance of him was just ok.

I felt the tension between these two, how they grew together, the beasts were done well too. I felt immersed in this story and couldn't wait for certain scenes as I remembered them as we went along. I thought the big twist was done so well and could feel at the feelings haha. Battles were done well and confrontations were on point. Again I think the female narrator sometimes with their naivety was too much for our FMC and sometimes the male narrator was too growly in some spots and not enough in others. Overall I still liked them, like I mentioned before I was deep in this story and enjoyed it the whole way through (4/5 stats aint bad for narration haha).

*~* Original Review *~*
AHHHH I LOVED THIS NEW WORLD AND I NEED MORE!!! Did you read that as someone fangirling and freaking out over her love of this world? You got that 100% correct hahaha. I could not get enough of Ronson and Mairwen, I absolutely loved their love story, their personalities, their quirks and them growing into their own in their own ways/time. I could gush about this story for hours but I am gonna do some quick highlights because this is one of my all-time favorite authors and anything she writes I devour and get sucked into.

I was worried about Ronson in the beginning but that changed so quickly and I wanted to smush him and have him for myself haha. His alpha tendencies were delicious but his super tender moments (when he couldnt control some of his urges) were so adorable. I loved the nuzzling and cuddling and not being able to keep his hands off Mairwen. I also loved how he stood up for her (esp with her parents), took her thoughts and strategy into consideration, and just everything about him made me swoon. Mairwen was an amazing MC and I want to be her bestie. I loved her awkwardness and her love of reading. I loved seeing her grow and feel comfortable in her own skin and sticking up for herself while still playing the politics games. How she got into the thick of it when the fire and then the big conflict BOOOOOOOOY I WAS SO READY! I didnt see some of that coming, not gonna lie. I assumed partial but not full IYKYK. I loved her analytical mind but her soft side (I really connected with her) and I loved her relationship she grew with Ronson’s family. She discovered some amazing things and helped change their world of the better. I can’t stop haha.

So last thing I will say...the steam in this 😍😍😍😍 I loved anything omega/alpha/beta and I loved that this author (who helped bring in so many readers into her sweetverse universe) brought a new twist to this world and made it different than her shared universe. I thought this fantasy/historical twist on A/B/O was brilliant and was different enough to distinguish from her other works but the ties to it that we know and love were still prevalent. The nesting was amazing (I wanted to hug Mairwen so much!), the scenting, the attraction, the heats/ruts were sexy and also made me smile and happy with their precious moments together (the foreplay/checking each other out before things got too far was amazing!!). You got the sense of dread with the ruts, the amount of deaths that they have caused, and the livelihoods of these omegas being thrown away. The way the author made things improve, made the omegas have a voice, the betas being put in their place when they were ready to discard these ladies.

So much goodness in this book! There is a lot of push and pull, the two love birds have to get used to and learn from each other. I loved seeing Ronson’s humility, new ways of thinking, his caring side. I loved seeing Mairwen’s confidence grow, the joy she was finding in her sexuality and realizing she was more than good enough and so worth it. Sorry again for the happy rant, I couldn’t get enough.

NOW the only thing I will say I was not 100% onboard with was the very ending/epilogue. I was super excited to see a certain big moment in their life and we didn’t get to see his joy of finding out or hers with telling him. We get super far in the future which is cool because I am super excited to see what happens with the next leader of the Dragonkin but I did feel sad we missed those moments after that was a subplot/danger for her and other omegas (not spoiling it I promise!). Other than that, I can’t sing my praises enough ❤️

Loved the twists in this story!

This is a REAL romance. It's the kind where you see the couple grow from interest, then attraction, then love. It's fun, it's romantic and the love scenes are well written. The main characters are really likeable, and there's tension and excitement. The end suggests that the second book about their daughter might be really interesting.

A real romance
