Just as good as the first!

it was nice having those whom deserved to be thrown in jail get there just rewards. And what strange aliens. I like how they all are not humanoid and are REALLY alien.

Exceptional Sequel in which a new threat arises

Tempest Rising picks up from the end of Caspian’s Fortune, with Cas and Box still on the Tempest, recovering from the destruction of the Reasonable Excuse, after Cas used it to destroy Veena’s ship, and the weapon that was stolen from the Sil. In Caspian’s Fortune, Warren wrote a book full of intrigue, and political infighting that outlined the Sovereign Coalition and the Sargan Commonwealth, as well as introducing the Sil Sanctuary.
The Sil are a race of Xenophobes, preferring to execute (after a trial of course), rather than speak to an inferior species. However, Cas tried to save one of their ships when he was previously in the Coalition.
And this is why Evie sought him out, for a secret squirrel mission to help the Coalition with the Sil.
As such, they are off to go and find the Sil, so that they can fly Cas out front as a peace symbol to at least get close enough to hopefully reach speaking terms.
The Coalition are desperate, having seen an enemy, code named ‘Andromeda’ coming that can destroy Suns with a single blast. (You can see a little kid from the Andromeda mob, pushing a little Empire kid, “Our Super Weapon is better than your Death Star – only destroys a planet, so much for the power of the dark side…”
As well as having to deal with the Sil, Cas has several other issues he has to confront aboard the Tempest. Whilst Evie and the Captain are aware that he is no longer a traitor to the Coalition, the rest of the crew are not. As such, he is met with disgust at every turn, and outright hatred from some crew members such as Lt Page, the Head of Security.
Tempest Rising continues to develop the complex character development that began in book 1, with the further development of the relationship of Cas and Box, Cas and Evie, as well as just the overall development of the individual characters. We are introduced to the Sil Consul Zenfor, who is a fascinating character, and the Sil, as well as Zenfor, are some of the most extraordinary characters in this book. One of the other interesting characters is Sester, the Chief Engineer. Sester is an alien, and I will let you read about him rather than describing anything here, but the descriptive work by Warren is just outstanding. He has put so much thought and effort into the world building of the Races, the Worlds they come from, and the Technology that they use. It creates so much more depth to the story, leaving you totally engaged.
Warren does a remarkable job in exploring the utter hatred, fear, and disgust that members of the crew have towards Cas, as well as some of the other characters have, such as one of the characters, Zaal, an alien, is rather fascinated by Cas and invites him to dinner as he wants to get to know him better. As mentioned, Lt Page has so much hatred that he hunts him through the ship, as well as box, looking to do him harm. As a former Police Officer, and having seen corruption and how it affects other Police, I found Warren’s description of these characters to be exceptionally realistic, and very powerful and emotive. His writing can be very gritty, and remarkably life-like, regardless it is incredibly clever, creative, and utterly engaging, you will find yourself totally engrossed in the book, unable to put it down, telling yourself “only one more chapter, only one more section…’ until you suddenly realise that it is 4am in the morning and you haven’t stopped.
As I said earlier, Cas has to navigate the crew as well as a few other issues, to try and gain help from the Sil, so that he can bring them aboard the Ship to try and get their help with upgrades in meeting this new threat that can destroy not just planets, but entire stars. The fate of the Coalition hangs on his shoulders this time around, and yet, his only friend is a quirky robot with an obsession for soap operas.
Doesn’t matter what type of Sci-fi you like, you will love this series, it is totally brilliant, and you just can’t miss it.
Larry Gorman is pretty good as a Narrator, he reads well, is clear and easy to understand. He does a good set of Male and Female voices, and you can distinguish between the male and female voices, however it is difficult to tell the difference between the different characters, so you have to pay attention to who is talking, otherwise you can lose track of which character is speaking. With a book this is ok, you can always work it out, but it is not so easy with an audiobook.
This is being very pedantic though, as he reads very nicely, and he is very nice to listen to. I look forward to future audiobooks from him.
