In this fifth book in the Magykal series, Septimus ends up on a captivatingly beautiful island, one of seven set in a sparkling sea. He's stranded there with his badly injured dragon, Spit Fyre, along with Jenna and Beetle. There are some strange things about the island, including a Magykal girl named Syrah, a cat-shaped lighthouse that has lost its Light, and an eerie presence that sings to Septimus—can he escape the persistent call?

Trouble is also brewing for Lucy and Wolf Boy, who have become entangled with some nefarious sailors at sea, and for Milo Banda, Jenna's father, who is harboring a mysterious treasure chest in his ship's hold.

Charismatic storyteller Angie Sage continues Septimus Heap's Magykal journey with more laugh-out-loud adventures, more enchanting charms and spells, and an ever-deepening understanding of the interior life of a young hero.

I liked the book, I can't say that these series are my favorite but they are okay.. the adventures that the kids went through were interesting it does keep you wanting to listen more to see what will happen. there are times where I feel like the book drug on and it could have ended but they are still good listening.

The story continues

Would you consider the audio edition of Syren to be better than the print version?

I love the audible version so much the way he changes his voice for each character brings the book to life.

What did you like best about this story?

The the description of everything in the book made me feel like i was there.

What does Gerard Doyle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The personality of each character, comes out in his voice.

Any additional comments?

if you like this series, you should give the bartimeus trilogy a listen or a read. the gaurdians of ga'hoole, or the Deltora series were some of my favorites as a kid as well, for the avid young reader. the septimus heap series however has grown more mature with each book, and i am glad i have dove back into this series after leaving off after book 3 a decade ago. i just wish it wasn't 25 bucks a book because i blow through 20-25 hours of listening time at work in 2 or 3 days. the narration on this book was excellent, although the ending was a bit abrupt. it is well written but a bit all over the place covering different characters situations within the story in each successive chapter. a cool journey nonetheless and it made me look forward to coming to work to find out what happens next as i weld all day, which otherwise, would be rather boring without the company of a good book. 👍 but seriously, check out bartimeus, i would rate that trilogy 6 out of 5 stars..

one of my favorites

Terrific episode in the Septimus Heap series. Angie Sage has put together such a robust set of characters with great backstory and excellent plotting. But it is the appeal of the characters and the settings that puts it in the upper realm of fantasy. Some really obnoxious characters throughout, I must admit.

Stands the test of time well--I have read the series many times. Eminently re-readable series, so especially worth your Audible credits.

Warmly recommended
